The San Fernando Valley Group meets on the 3rd Tuesday of each month at 7:00 p.m. at the headquarters of the Reseda Neighborhood Council, 18118 Sherman Way Reseda 91335.

Inviting Wild Birds into Your Garden with Nesting Boxes
with Scott Logan
Raised in Los Angeles, Scott Logan has been a nature lover since childhood and knows our Southern California wildlife intimately. Birds have always been the focus of his attention. Scott is a co-owner of Wild Wings Backyard Nature Store, located at 4337 Woodman Avenue, Sherman Oaks, CA 91423. The store is a hub for information and provisions needed to connect with our remarkable Southern California birdlife.
Whether Scott is educating people in the store, reviewing someone's yard, or leading bird walks, he is always ready to help enthusiasts experience wildlife on a deeper level.
According to Scott, adding bird houses to your garden provides the real estate that many bird species need to survive. Different species exploit different niches, and knowing what these differences are will help you create an attractive environment for these remarkable creatures.
Scott will explain why nest-box and hole size matter, the proper placement for each species' box, and how habitat comes into play. By using this information, you will greatly increase your odds of having cavity-nesting birds breeding in your yard.

More Ocean, Less Plastic: Solutions to Our Global Plastic Crisis
with Anna Cummins of 5 Gyres
Anna Cummins and her husband Dr. Marcus Eriksen represent the organization 5 Gyres, which is devoted to researching plastic pollution in the world's oceans. As a result of years of research in the North Pacific and other ocean locations, Ms. Cummins and her husand have found a "smog" of plastic covering 21% of the planet's surface.
5 Gyres uses science, education, and adventure to engage communities in upstream solutions to plastic pollution--such as changing product design, advocating for source reduction, and pushing to eliminate the "worst offenders."

How We Can Solve Climate Change AND Strengthen Our Nation's Economy
with Dr. Richard Elsley
We've got a great speaker lined up for you this month. On Tuesday, August 15, 2017, at 7:00 p.m., Dr. Richard Elsley will give a presentation entitled "How We Can Solve Climate Change AND Strengthen Our Nation's Economy."
Dr. Elsley has a Ph.D. in Physics from Cornell University and 30 years experience working as a research scientist. Elsley enjoys explaining scientific ideas in terms that anyone can understand. For this reason he enjoys going by another name: "Dr. Discovery."
Dr. Elsley teaches interactively, visiting Ventura County classrooms and asking students lots of provocative questions.
He will speak to us about what he considers the best solution to the greenhouse gases trapping the sun's heat and warming the earth: gradually raising the price of carbon-based energy by means of a carbon fee that is returned to all citizens.
