Learn about dangerous releases from Torrance refinery -- and what you can do about it

The accidental release of modified hydrofluoric acid (MHF) at the recently sold ExxonMobil refinery in Torrance on Sept. 6 was a warning sign and wakeup call for South Bay communities.  

Join the Torrance Refinery Action Alliance from 5:45 to 7:30 p.m. Monday, October 5, to learn, ask questions, share information, and discuss the case against MHF at ExxonMobil. The meeting will be held at 2761 W. 190th St. in Redondo Beach (the meeting room is in the back on the northwest corner of the building).

Leadership Training Committee announces new administrator

The Chapter's Leaderhip Training (LTC) and Outings Management (OMC) committees announce a new team approach to the duties of the LTC Administrator a role that provides guidance and records managment for outings leader candidates.
 
Former Administrator Bob Draney, is retiring from the position of sole LTC Admin. Now Adrienne Benedict has stepped in to head up a team consisting of LTC Chair Anne Marie Richardson, Bob Draney and OMC Chair Jane Simpson.

Join us for the annual Angeles Chapter Outings Assembly on Nov. 1 at Kenneth Hahn State Recreation Area in Los Angeles.

The theme this year is "Communication, Social Media and National Parks 2016." A program agenda will be provided, with various workshops available at 10 a.m. followed by the meeting starting at 11 a.m.

Fire in Montebello Hills raises new dangers about housing proposal

Officials in Montebello, Calif., have confirmed that damage from a recent wildfire was more extensive than previously reported. 

The Lincoln Fire began around 1:30 p.m. on Aug. 16 near the Rio Hondo River section of the Whittier Narrows. The fire spread quickly in two directions, north to the Bosque de Rio Hondo recreation area and east into the Montebello Hill oilfield. The oilfield is located within Unit 9 of the California Gnatcatcher Critical Habitat designated by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in 2007.

Back to the beach: Access in Malibu reopens

Finally! The path and pristine views along one of Malibu's most exclusive coastlines are now easily accessible to all of us. After a decade long legal fight that pitted public access advocates against a wealthy homeowner who refused to build a path, the California Coastal Commission officially opened a walkway along the 1.5-mile Carbon Beach earlier in September.

Hey Google, you aren't the only one with a new logo. The Sierra Club has rolled out a new, cleaner symbol.

Don't worry, after 124 years, it's still the emblematic sequoia tree. It's still Yosemite Valley. And it's still our Sierra Club name.
