The California Department of Fish and Wildlife’s Ballona FEIR Betrays the Public Trust

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) is betraying the public trust. The newly released Final Environmental Impact Report (FEIR) serves the interests of a group of private/fossil fuel/NGO entities who are intent upon the radical transformation of Ballona, violating both the protected status of the Ecological Reserve and the vested interests of the public.

On Tuesday December 10th, Athens sanitation workers as well as labor, environmental, faith and community organizations packed the Beverly Hills City Hall chambers to oppose a contract extension with Athens. The city did approve the contract extension. But with the support of labor and community leaders, we were able to insert worker retention language, which will ensure that these workers keep their jobs. We must still be vigilant but this is huge!

In addition, we got the city to increase their environmental standards. We did this in Beverly Hills!

Sanitation is a necessary job if we want to have a clean city. And just like the environment we live in is important to us, the environment we affect is just as integral.
On December 10th, the City of Beverly Hills is considering giving Athens Environmental a no-bid contract extension. The proposal has stated to decrease their diversion requirement 60% to 53%—a major problem seeing as this sets the city and the LA county back with their environmental goals.
