The proposed San Gabriel River Discovery Center at Whittier Narrows passed another milestone in its long journey with the issuance on June 5 of an environmental study analyzing the benefits, as well as the impacts and how to minimize them.

The Draft Environmental Impact Report provides material both for supporters of the planned environmental education center, and opponents who argue that it would damage the environment and belongs somewhere else. At the time of this writing, the Angeles Chapter has taken no position on the Discovery Center.

The concept of sustainability has been brandished about in recent years as the mantra of a broad new collation of activists and citizens pushing to get traction on global environmental problems. Sustainable is the new buzzword for a public awakened to the pressing concerns of global warming and its attendant impacts on the environment. We've been convinced: global warming is real and we're eager to do something to help. We're ready to be sustainable.

CONSERVATION COORDINATOR MADDALENA SERRA AND MEMBERS OF THE ANGELES CHATPER ZERO WASTE COMMITTEE ATTENDED THE CITY WIDE ZERO WASTE CONFERENCE

On May 30th the City of Los Angeles Department of Public Works presented the draft of the Solid Waste Integrated Resource Plan, (SWIRP) Phase 2 at the 4th City Wide Zero Waste Conference at Our Lady of the Angeles Cathedral Conference Center. The planning phase of the SWIRP will last 6 years.
