Sometimes you can't win for trying.
The environmental and labor movements have often been criticized for being at odds with one another, for concentrating on issues narrowly to the exclusion of a broader picture. For nearly a decade now, environmental activists dealing with the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach have sought opportunities to ally with labor over problems caused by the shipping, trucking and rail companies that move goods in and out of the ports.

Three ordinances under consideration by Los Angeles County would change the face of local residential and commercial development, ushering in a new era of green building practices that would significantly reduce environmental waste, stimulate investment in renewable energy and help secure an ample supply of water for Southern California in years to come. If the plan can win approval in its current form, it will put the entire county on par with forward-thinking cities like Santa Monica and West Hollywood, which have already enacted exemplary green building legislation of their own.
California has enough water - enough to last into the next generation and beyond. It just needs to be managed more wisely. That's the central thesis of a new book by Dorothy Green, long-time Los Angeles water policy activist.
It is raining in Southern California. Traffic snarls. Electricity fails. Raw sewage runs into the sea. TV stations break into regular programming for special reports: 'Yes, Chet and Mindy, it's coming down hard here in Covina.'
The Conservation Management Committee sponsored a reception prior to the January Conservation Committee at the chapter headquarters in order to celebrate the outright donation of 175 acres of land in the Verdugo Hills to be preserved for the public, as well as to honor some of the key conservation leaders who worked on this effort. The Oakmont victory which Sierra Club played a significant role in set the table for this current victory, yet there are still more proposed developments in the Verdugos which activists are opposing.
