Santa Clarita once again faces the possibitity of a 56 million ton mega-mine in the community. Located on the east side of Santa Clarita, the damaging effects of air pollution from dust and trucks, traffic congestion on Interstate 5 through Newhall pass (a major north south route) and the possible contamination of the local aquifers make this a priority for the north county groups. The City of Santa Clarita, all local elected officials, and a coalition of environmental and community groups including the Sierra Club, have worked together to stop the mega-mine.

Sea lions basked on a buoy and on rocks and dolphins played near our ship. Cormorants and brown pelicans flew nearby...
After several years of hearing my spouse comment on the number of catalogs coming into the house, I did what any data geek would do - I collected all the catalogs that arrived in our mailbox in one year. And, I discovered my spouse had every right to be alarmed. In 2001. we received 396 catalogs - more than one a day, and a stack 3 feet high!!! That's a lot of paper, ink, and enticement to over-consume.
