Angeles Chapter Awards Nominations Open : Deadline is Tuesday, Nov. 1, 2011

The Awards Committee invites all Angeles Chapter entity chairs to submit nominees for the 2011 chapter awards. The submission deadline is Tuesday, November 1, 2011. Submissions can be sent any time before that date. Late applications will be held over for the 2012 awards, so earlier is better to ensure all candidates are honored in a timely way.

Eco-Enlightenment at UCLA

Education is the theme of this Southern Sierran, and certainly teaching children about the wonders of the ecosystem that sustains us is supremely important. But, what is offered to college-age young people or to older adults ready for career change or enhancement? Various programs are provided by UCLA, ranked in the top 10 eco-enlightened universities in the nation by Sierra Magazine (2009).

'When can we go camping again. Grandma?' asked my four year old granddaughter.

Those words gave me goose bumps, because nothing is more satisfying to me than sharing the out of doors with young people, especially my nearest and dearest.

To begin, with, not everyone in my family agreed that taking preschoolers camping was a good idea. When I told my older and childless son, the long distance solo hiker, that I was taking the girls camping, he replied 'Count me out. They're too young I'll wait ‘til they're older.'

Montebello Hills Task Force Exposes Pattern Of Oil Spills

An oil spilt that contaminated a storm drain pool and the Rio Hondo River in Southern California is under investigation by California Fish and Wildlife detetmine if the oil field operator violated water pollution laws. The investigation was triggered after members of the Sierra Club's Save the Montebello Hills Task Force. provided evidence to the media that this was not the first spill in the same location.

Direct Potable Reuse Of Water

As water reaources become increasingly scarce in California, attention has turned to ways to make the best use of the water that we have. One such method of stretching our water supply is direct potabte reuse. Direct potable reuse as the introduction of highly treated recycled water either directly into the potable water distribution downstream of a water treatment plant (i.e., pipe-to-pipe), or into a raw water supply immediately upstream of a water treatment plant.
