Hi everyone! My name is Alex Chang, and I worked as a volunteer for the Sierra Club Angeles Chapter this summer. I recently graduated from Claremont High School in Claremont, California, and I am starting at UCLA this fall as a Climate Science major. In my free time, I like hiking, playing basketball with my friends, and learning as much as I can about the world.
During my time with Sierra Club, I mainly worked at the front desk, occasionally answering the phone and working in the email system. Not only was it a great opportunity to familiarize myself with an office environment and its requirements, but I also had the unique opportunity to be around some incredible people; I got to sit in on a few meetings with the team, including Chapter Director Morgan Goodwin, and it was inspiring to see their dedication to their work. I was taken aback by how impactful and far the Sierra Club organization truly reaches in politics and the greater Los Angeles community, and I’m proud to be associated with it. I am constantly getting voicemails and emails from people thanking the Sierra Club for the work they do to create and maintain parks and green space, reduce plastic pollution, and eliminate oil and gas drilling near our communities and it feels great to be a part of such a well-respected group.
Although I’m going to be a busy college student, I will definitely carve out time in the coming years to continue my involvement with the Sierra Club. I want to keep offering my services around the office, and maybe expand to more important work within the organization should I be needed for it.
For those of you who might be interested in helping out in the Angeles Chapter office, please don’t hesitate to do so. Being a front desk volunteer for a local Sierra Club chapter offers the opportunity to engage with the community, promote environmental awareness, and play a pivotal role in supporting the organization's mission beyond administrative tasks.
Also, consider making a donation or becoming a member to help support the work we do. You can help us with that here. Thank you for reading, and I hope I see you around!
