Easy Hikes

The Angeles Chapter leads hikes and walks at many levels from easy to strenuous — from urban walks and local hikes at a relaxed pace to multi-day backpacks and intense mountaineering adventures. There is something for everyone! Each outing on the SCHEDULE OF ACTIVITIES describes the type of trip and will often note whether it is suitable for families or newcomers or those seeking an easy walk. All of our outings are conducted by certified outings leaders (usually two on each outing), trained by the Leadership Training Committee and certified by our Safety Committee. The Chapter has been maintaining these high leadership standards since 1973 and we've set the bar for many other outings programs. Find out more about the Leadership Training Program.

If you want to take it easy on a short walk on a trail or road or sand (!), SEARCH OUR SCHEDULE OF ACTIVITIES and look for "O" at the start of a title. Examples are O: L.A.River Walk or O: Ventura Beach Day. But also look for mileage, elevation gain and other notes in the description. Not all O hikes are "easy"!

Easy HIke Destinations. There are tons of trailheads and city walks to choose from. Easier hikes may start in parks and nature centers in your geographic area. Neighborhood walks, reservoirs, LA River, the huge Griffith Park are other examples. Santa Clarita area has Towsley Canyon and Placerita; the San Fernando Valley has Wildwood, Aliso Canyon, Sepulveda Basin and more. Southern California beaches and shoreline paths are usually easy and family-friendly too. In the mountains, easy hikes can be found from campgrounds along the Angeles Crest and similar mountain locations. In the Santa Monica Mountains, look for Malibu Creek, Will Rogers State Park, Solstice Canyon and fireroads (be aware of closures due to recent fires). Orange County has the Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve, Oak Canyon Nature Center, Dana Point, Red Rock Canyon / Whiting Ranch Wilderness, and much more.

The Waiver. We have a sign-in process that includes signing a liability waiver at the trailhead or sometimes in advance online.  See Rules and Guidelines for more.

Accessibility. Some hikes are at places that are very suitable for those concerned about footing or need for a wheelchair, such as trips that go on roads or smoother trails. You can always ask the leader if you spot something that appeals to you.

Dogs. Our canine friends are only allowed on hikes that are designated as K-9 hikes in the description. You can always ask the leader.

Minors. See our Rules and Guidelines for more information on minors on outings, whether accompanied by parents or not. Leaders should always be asked in advance to ensure a safe and comfortable trip..
