Celebrating Earth Day Since 1970

I first started celebrating Earth Day when it began in 1970. I was a junior in high school in Manhattan (NYC). Someone brought brooms & shovels & we swept the sidewalks in front of nearby stores.

One fellow came outside and said, 'So you're sweeping today, but who will take care of it tomorrow?'

We replied, 'We have given you a running start. Now you need to run with it going forward.

I can basically speak for the students. We felt excited about Earth Day. I also recall that some people were singing upbeat folk songs (such as 'He's got the whole world in his hands.')
