Join us in building the Chapter's Living Legacy Library

The Angeles Chapter, oldest and largest in the Sierra Club, is beginning its second century – and we intend to be around for another hundred years at least.

On almost our first day in 1912, the Chapter library got off to the best possible start with books autographed and donated by John Muir. Over the years, we added classic works ranging from the mountains of California to the Alps, Himalayas, Andes, Africa, the Artic and beyond.

Then in the 1960s came the series of Sierra Club folio books featuring photography by Ansel Adams, Cedric Wright, Elliott Porter and other greats, which won the National Book Award. In the modern era their tradition continued with the generation of Galen Rowell and Fred Beckey.

Over the same decades, environmental voices led by David Brower, Joseph Wood Krutch and Wallace Stegner spoke on behalf of wilderness and a sustainable environment as resources we can no longer take for granted.

Visit the Living Legacy Library web page to learn more and find out how you can become involved.

The Angeles Chapter core collection preserves these treasures and many more, yet it is far from complete. Recent donations by three long-time Chapter members of classic books, periodicals and maps inspired us to think about the future of our library

Today, in 2014, some say print is being totally displaced by electronic media. If so, this is a “last call” to pull together the print masterworks of decades past in a Living Legacy Library that celebrates great writing and great photography, and honors donors who have helped us preserve a great tradition for the ages.

If you wish to join in this work, our Librarian Glenn Pascall will arrange a visit to your home library. Glenn looks forward to learning your personal story of involvement with the Chapter and the great outdoors, and walking with you through shelves of treasured volumes for possible inclusion in the Chapter Library. If you prefer, Glenn can work with you to coordinate a direct shipment to the library. Each donor will receive written thanks and will appear on the permanent roster of Living Legacy Library contributors.

Nice idea. What is being done to digitize some of the older publications like the So. Sierran, so that they can be searched electronically?

<p>Judy,</p> <p>Thanks for your reply. &nbsp;</p> <p>Electronic versions of individual Southern Sierran stories are available to browse or search back <a href="http://angeles2.sierraclub.org/news/news_blog?page=21">10 years to June 2004</a>.</p> <p>There are no other plans to scan older issues and post electronic versions beyond those already available online.</p> <p>Thanks,</p> <p>George Watland, Sr. Director, Sierra Club Angeles Chapter</p> <p>&nbsp;</p>
