New Books and DVDs Available for Checkout to Angeles Chapter Members

Former Sierra Club executive director Michael McCloskey heads the library's list of new authors. In The Thick of It: My Life in the Sierra Club is the autobiography of the man who followed the controversial David Brower and helped move the organization to the national stage. McCloskey faced and met an unprecedented challenge in replacing a dynamic fighter and taking the club into a strong and forceful future.

Learn more about David Brower, the man Michael McCloskey succeeded, in the DVD Monumental: David Brower's Fight for Wild America. Brower adopted Yosemite Valley and the threatened beauty of American lands as his personal obligation. His battles within and beyond the organization mirrored his passion for nature.

R.J. Secor covers all the known routes to and around 570 peaks in The High Sierra: Peaks, Passes and Trails. The new edition of this guide provides the most comprehensive information about these areas, including 80 new routes and new photos throughout.

A different kind of California attraction is covered in Finding Fault in California: An Earthquake Tourist's Guide. Susan Hough provides earthquake history, maps to pinpoint specific locations and a survey of the state's geological landscapes.

Land of Sunshine: An Environmental History of Metropolitan Los Angeles is an exploration of the environmental history of the city, the plants and animals of the basin, its rivers and watersheds and the diverse cultures that have shaped it. Chapters written by authoritative authors support the work of planners and environmentalists working to enhance the future of Los Angeles.

Although people usually equate pollution with Los Angeles, Silent Snow: The Slow Poisoning of the Arctic reveals that the Arctic is home to some of the most contaminated people and animals on the planet. Marla Cone traveled across the Arctic hunting whales with native Alaskans and tracking endangered polar bears in Norway, providing an insider's view of pollution to Arctic native peoples and ecosystems.
