Superior Court Judge Clair S. Tappaan at the 1913 dedication of the Muir Lodge. The judge poses with a large portion of the Southern California Chapter, with whom he planted the little sequoia tree in the center foreground. The sequoia grew prodigiously, as did the Southern California Chapter, which grew up to be known as the Angeles Chapter. |
Born in San Antonio Texas, Jerry de la Peza moved to California as a child with his family. From 1953 to 1956, he was Cpl. de la Peza, in the 35th Infantry Regiment during the Korean War. Following his service in the U.S. Army, he settled in Montebello, his home of 49 years.
If you've ever taken a hike in the San Gabriel Mountains, chances are it's been on a trail, and if you're like most of us you've taken that simple pathway for granted. On your next hike, though, think about how it would be to go from your starting point to your destination and back without that trail.
Yes, trails are definitely important in easing our access to favored locations in the wilderness; but they also provide protection to our wilderness resources by channeling traffic into narrow corridors and thereby decreasing human impact on surrounding areas.

I am a retired research scientist with Amgen, Inc. I first joined the Sierra Club in the 60s and, after a short hiatus, have been a member since 1993. The Sierra Club has always stood for grass roots environmentalism and getting out into our natural areas - which is what I do.
Angeles Chapter's Political Committee needs you! Whether you live in Los Angeles or Orange County, you can join the Political Committee and make a difference for the environment. Send an email.
Do you know of a fellow Angeles Chapter member who volunteers tirelessly in service to the Club through conservation, outings, activism, or advocacy? The Chapter Awards Committee wants your ideas on awards candidates. Among the over 42,000 members in LA and Orange County, there are many hard-working volunteers who give their time to the Sierra Club and the Chapter.
