'Towering 1800 feet above Los Angeles, just a stone's throw from the famed Hollywood Sign, is the crown jewel opportunity of Southern California real estate,' the ad goes on. Hikers in Griffith Park know that this 'coveted property' is none other than Cahuenga Peak.

May is the month of thanksgiving - that is, this is the time we give thanks to the thousands of members who do all that they do to make the Angeles Chapter and the Sierra Club function effectively. For example, on May 4th is the Annual Chapter Awards Banquet, in which we acknowledge the superlative efforts of many of our leaders.

Small Gestures Get Big Results

As I got in the elevator from the lower parking structure up to Ralphs Supermarket in Studio City, I heard frantic heels running behind me to make it through the closing door.

The owner of the heels made it inside; the elevator ascended. We smiled at each other and then she saw my Heal The Bay canvas bag. 'I forgot my bag,' she gasped. 'I have to go back!'

New Submission Requirements

New Deadline for all submissions - ads, articles, calendar items - the first Friday of each month. Therefore, anything you'd like in the June issue must be submitted by the first Friday in May; anything for July musts be in on the first Friday of June. Articles & Calendar Items: Must be submitted as .rtf file attachments. Calendar items must include sponsoring entity, date, difficulty rating.

Ads must be sent camerea-ready, i.e., electronically, and ready to be laid out in the paper.

Sometimes you can't win for trying.

The environmental and labor movements have often been criticized for being at odds with one another, for concentrating on issues narrowly to the exclusion of a broader picture. For nearly a decade now, environmental activists dealing with the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach have sought opportunities to ally with labor over problems caused by the shipping, trucking and rail companies that move goods in and out of the ports.
