The 2024 election cycle looms large on the horizon, with the California Primary just eight months away. In this pivotal time, the Sierra Club is gearing up to support environmental champions and combat polluter-backed candidates across the state of California. As part of this mission, we recently celebrated our 16th annual Sierra Club Political Leadership Awards fundraiser, an event that embodies our commitment to equity, democracy, and sustainability.
 

2024 Angeles Chapter Banquet and Awards Presentation

Plans are already underway for the 2024 Angeles Chapter Banquet and Awards Presentation! The event will be held in May of 2024 - exact date and location are TBD.

Pro-Cyclist Phil Gaimon Hosts Events in Support of the Angeles Chapter

Phil Gaimon, who refers to himself as a retired pro-cyclist (he calls it the “worst retirement ever”), is passionate about many things including cycling, his lovely wife, his adorable dogs, cookies, and the environment.

Barrington Plaza Evictions - the climate and justice angle

To: The Honorable Mayor Karen Bass and Members of the Los Angeles City Council,
 
The Sierra Club has recently learned about the pending evictions of 558 households in the Barrington Plaza apartment complex. We are very concerned that allowing this eviction would be an unjust contribution to the homelessness crisis, and move us backwards on our efforts to address climate emissions. 
 

Magnolia Tank Farm

The Orange County Conservation Committee of the Sierra Club has been actively involved in a most important project to stop the rezoning of a 29-acre site that sits less than a mile from Huntington State Beach near the Huntington Beach Wetlands - the Magnolia Tank Farm.  Unfortunately, the City of Huntington Beach Local Coastal Program (LCP) is currently seeking certification from the California Coastal Commission for an amendment to their LCP that is specific to this site.  The controversial project-specific amendment would allow the rezoning of this land from public to resident

The Cool Irvine Program

The United Nations launched its Cool Cities Challenge at the Sharm El-Sheikh meeting in 2022 to encourage cities to enhance the number of nature-based cooling solutions within their boundaries because cities are warming twice as fast as the global average.  In California, the Empowerment Institute issued a challenge, and the City of Irvine was chosen as one of three cities, along with Los Angeles and Petaluma, to participate in this ground-breaking program to reach community-wide sustainability.
