ICO Gift Wrapping Fundraiser: A Huge Success!!

The holiday spirit was soaring high on the 23rd and 24th of December 2023, during our annual ICO gift wrapping fundraiser. Every year, we organize this event to aid our efforts in facilitating outdoor trips for students enrolled in the Title I schools we collaborate with in the Los Angeles and Orange counties. During the 2022-2023 school year, our Angeles ICO leaders led 84 trips for 2530 students from marginalized communities within the area.

In a surprising turn of events, Irvine's groundbreaking plastics ban, seven years in the making, faced an unexpected roadblock. The proposal, touted as the most comprehensive municipal ban in the country, aimed to address the pervasive issue of single-use plastics. However, just three weeks before the crucial City Council vote, a powerful coalition of statewide industry groups launched a counter- campaign that actively and widely spread misinformation.

Veteran’s Day weekend was the “first” for many participants of Sierra Club’s Inspiring Connections Outdoors (ICO). For some, it was their first time braving a hike. For others, it was their first time touching a kitchen stove. For many, it was their first time enjoying the beauty of Anza Borrego State Park. Yet, collectively, it was a peaceful weekend surrounded by the warmth of community, an escape from the hold of social media and technology.
 

Exploring the Senses and Safety: Highlights from the ICO Retreat at Harwood Lodge

Next time you go for a hike try this strategy to enhance your observation.  Thinking about your five senses, note 5 things you see, 4 that you hear, 3 that you smell, 2 to feel and 1 to taste.  This was one of the suggestions made during the Nature and Children Workshop at ICO’s first annual retreat at Harwood Lodge, held on September 22 - 24.
