1 Million LA and Ventura County Residents Now Receiving 100% Renewable Energy
SACRAMENTO –Governor Gavin Newsom delivered some good news and bad news for California's environment during his state-of-the-state address on Tuesday.
The governor announced that he does not support the California Water Fix proposal for two giant, 35-mile tunnels to divert water from the San Francisco Bay Delta. However, he declared his support for a single tunnel—an alternative proposal that has not gone through any economic and environmental analysis.
Robert (Bob) Lewis, a long-time dedicated Sierra Club member, died of Pulmonary Fibrosis on Thursday December 13th, 2018 at Your Place care facility in Thousand Oaks, CA. He was born in Millburn, New Jersey, October 15th 1931, and his surving family lives in Pennsylvania and Tennessee. His cremains will be placed in the family plot at Abington Hills Cemetery, Clarks Summit, Pennsylvania.
Jo Ann Hickerson Dodson passed away peacefully from complications due to Alzheimer’s. She was 75.
She volunteered with the Sierra Club and the Antelope Valley Poppy Reserve.
She is survived by her husband, James Dodson; her daughters Tina Petersen, Eleanor Dodson, and Laura Spidell; her grandchildren Zachary Spidell, Turner Spidell, Jessica Stuebing, Lauren Petersen, and Katie Petersen; and her brother Lloyd Hickerson and his family.
The massive BKK Corporation Landfill in West Covina closed 23 years ago; it’s history pockmarked with chemical spills on streets leading to the dump, methane and vinyl chloride leaks, evacuations of residents, and prolonged litigation. There’s no getting rid of the landfill. It’s contents – 20 million tons of decomposing trash and 3.4 million tons of toxic hazardous waste – will remain there for decades to come.
In response to the current government shutdown and the negative impact it is having on our San Gabriel Mountains and San Gabriel River, we are organizing a rapid response river cleanup at the Heaton Flats area of the San Gabriel River. Come show your support for the San Gabriel Mountains and for the Forest Service employees and volunteers who are not currently allowed to care for the San Gabriels while the government is closed.
The South Coast Air Quality Management District (AQMD) has the opportunity to adopt Rule 1410 and completely phase out dangerous MHF from our local refineries. They need to hear from the public, to support this resolution for a complete ban, but it is facing strong opposition from the Torrance Refinery and Valero (Wilmington) Refinery.
The San Gabriel Valley Task Force of Angeles Chapter, the Clean Air Coalition of North Whittier and Avocado Heights (CAC) with the Hacienda Heights Improvement Association (HHIA) have formed a coalition with residents to oppose expansion of the Quemetco lead/acid battery recycling plant in the City of Industry. Residents are concerned about health impacts of past and present emissions of lead and arsenic from the facility.
