Thanks to a Zero Waste Committee member Bernadette Dollard's relationship with El Camino College, the Zero Waste Committee and students in the Graphic Design Program at El Camino College collaborated to create a new logo for the Committee to aid outreach efforts promoting the elimination of waste.

This was a great experience for both Zero Waste Committee members and the graphic design students; it gave the committee a chance to interact with a young audience who were new to the idea of Zero Waste, and it gave the students a chance to express their vision.

The work done by the students in such a short time was excellent. After a month of intense research on the issues related to waste and after preparing several design thumbnails, the students' efforts showed into 35 final draft logo concept ual designs--the culmination of a lot of hard work but just the beginning of the second phase of the project: bringing the design from a draft concept to a final logo.

The presentation gave the students a glimpse of the working relationships between a graphic designer and a client. The committee members narrowed 35 down to 3 finalists: Christalle Kishi's Spiral Trash Can, Peter Santos's Row of Trash Cans, and Keelan Countee's Z/W Trash Can. The ultimate finalist was the Spiral Trash Can by Christalle Kishi. This logo representing a trash can stylized into a spiral culminating into an arrow to indicate the movement of waste to zero will be used as the official Zero Waste Committee logo.
