It has come to light that San Onofre nuclear plant, and OTHER PLANTS IN CALIFORNIA AS WELL, are using high burnup fuel, more than twice as radioactive and requires 3 times as much time (15 years) for safe storage, on-site cooling, without public knowledge. This is UNACCEPTABLE for Californians. As San Onofre is decommissioned, the current fuels there must be stored somewhere else, for a very compelling reason; As we prepare for "the big" earthquake, expert seismologists (from CalTech as well as others) predict that a likely epicenter along the San Andreas Fault line would be in Southern California, which happens to be close to the San Onofre plant! What kind of irresponsible, crazy planning is this! Edison and Mitsubishi are playing with our lives and the future safety for all Californians! The fact that other plants are using these high burning fuels as well (also in earthquake zones, as well , I should add), California in particular, should be closing down these plants quickly and turn to other safe fuel sources. Losing power in an earthquake would surely be a disaster--but unleashing large amounts of radioactive materials into waters, ocean, air and land, and into the areas of the most densely populated in the United States, would be catastrophic for future generations to come--What a NIGHTMARE scenario! We should be learning from the devastation that hit Japan, and the on-going dangers of radioactive leakage. What could happen here in a big earthquake, would be unimaginable.
