Equestrian Outings

Angeles Chapter encompasses many, many acres of beautiful open space, and some of us experience these places on horseback. Most areas open to hiking are also open to equestrians, and being on a horse often brings the advantage of being able to enjoy more of our environment. Additionally, the equestrian community is an important partner to the hiking community in protecting wildlands, and building and maintaining good trail systems.

Horse owners usually live in horse friendly areas, however, every now and then, we want to visit a new location. Of primary importance is an adequate 'staging area', ie, a good place to park your truck and horse trailer. Chesboro Park, in Agoura Hills combines a good staging area with great riding. A varied terrain of trees and open space, and views of the Santa Monica and Santa Susanna Mountains, as well as the San Fernando and Simi Valleys make this well worth the trip. Another area to visit is Santa Clarita, with its recent open space additions. A great staging area at Whitney Canyon (Newhall Ave, off the 14) allows the rider to experience the Oak Forests of Elsmere, Whitney and Placerita Canyons, as well as incredible views of the Santa Clarita Valley (and, if you're adventurous and tenacious, even views of the San Fernando Valley). Not to be left out is Griffith Park, the 'center of equestrian activity' to some. Here you can experience an amazing trail system with varied terrain, with views of both the San Fernando Valley and the City of L A from the ridges, on either your own horse, or you can rent a horse. One of the historic favorites for renters is the ride from Sunset Stables in Hollywood, across the hills, to dinner at Vivas in Burbank (and back, of course).

Horseback riding is a wonderful way to experience our varied trail system and I have mentioned just few of the many riding experiences in the Angeles Chapter area that are closer to where I live. However you choose to explore and enjoy the outdoors of the Angeles Chapter, please remember to share the trail.
