The chapter's Urban Park and Urban Environment Committee - dedicated to the preservation and conservation of urban parkland as open space and green space adding to the urban environment - had a busy 2010.

Throughout the year we focused on addressing threats to City of Los Angeles parks, including budget cuts that threatened to devastate park programs, operations and maintenance at Griffith Park and many neighborhood parks. Committee members also addressed local environmental challenges at the city's Echo Park and Hazard Park.

In the fall we helped organize a successful cleanup of the San Gabriel River at Whittier Narrows. About 100 volunteers pulled 700 pounds of trash from the river and the area around it.

In the new year, we'll continue to work to protect L.A. City parks for the families and children who depend on them. And we'll continue to work to expand awareness of and access to urban parks as gateways to exploring, enjoying and protecting the planet.

For further information, contact the committee or at (213) 250- 7921.
