Join the Climate Journey as a Cool Block Team Leader in LA and Irvine
You can green your neighborhood, make it safer to walk in, and more. Cool Block teams will meet, discuss, and implement sustainability concepts on topics related to energy efficiency, water conservation, emergency preparedness, and more. It’s up to you to decide with your neighbors based on your community's unique needs. This is why the Sierra Club Angeles Chapter voted to support the City of LA, and City of Irvine's Cool Blocks program. We would like to recruit you, if you live in LA or Irvine, sign up as a leader for your block.
Culver City is Phasing Out And Cleaning Up Oil Wells -- and That’s a Big Deal
Earlier this month, Culver City voted to phase out and clean up oil wells within the city’s borders by July 28, 2026. This vote is historic on multiple levels -- for starters, Culver City is one of the first cities in recent history to phase out existing oil production. The process, which included a study to inform the timeline to phase-out oil drilling, creates a pathway for the city and county of Los Angeles to follow.
SB 1383 Tackling Hunger, Waste and Climate
Nearly one in four Californians suffer from food insecurity.
Yet more than 11 billion pounds of edible food is wasted every year in California.
Organic waste, including food waste, decomposes in landfills releasing methane emissions that account for 20% of the state’s methane. Methane is a short-lived climate super pollutant 84 times more potent than carbon dioxide. Reducing methane has the fastest impact on the climate crisis.
Food Waste, Food Insecurity, Climate and Equity
This holiday season, do your part and take the necessary steps to reduce your food waste.
“In the United States, food waste is estimated at between 30–40 percent of the food supply,” as stated by the FDA. Although, even before the pandemic, twenty percent of the people in “the OC” went to bed hungry. Now, food insecurity is daily news.
