Bob Wheatley, 1916-2006

Bob Wheatley passed away Feb. 6. He was 89 years old.

Wheatley was very active in the Sierra Club, serving as chair of the Rio Hondo Section for several years and helping to found the Lower Peaks Committee. He received Chapter Awards in 1981 and 1988 for Outings Service and in 1992 for Special Service.

Wheatley was an enthusiastic environmentalist and a persuasive advocate for public transportation. He was an exceptional volunteer and an outstanding leader who led countless outings. He worked with trail-building teams, assisted at the Chapter office and was active in political committees.

In addition to hiking, Wheatley took many train rides, all across the U.S.; he also crossed Australia by train twice. He attended the opening days of several special events, including the first day of the San Francisco World Fair in 1939, the grand opening of Disneyland in 1955, and the opening of the Getty Center in 1997.
