You're Invited to Griffith Park's Birthday Party
On Saturday, November 13, Griffith Park celebrates its 125th birthday. There will be a party, and all of us are invited.
The L.A. Conservancy, in partnership with the City’s Department of Recreation and Parks, the Autry Museum of the American West, L.A. City Council District 4, and two dozen organizations, including the Sierra Club Angeles Chapter, “is committed to sharing the diverse stories of Griffith Park as it reaches this remarkable milestone.”
With no fee charged, party-goers are invited to explore the park using a map that shows where knowledgeable volunteers will be stationed. Lounging at Amir’s Garden will be a member of the Chapter’s Verdugo Hills Group, ready to answer questions about Amir and his creation. Members of the Chapter’s Central Group and Griffith Park Section will staff a Sierra Club table at the party’s central hub, which will be in the area between park headquarters and the merry-go-round parking lots.
At around 9:30 a.m., members of the Griffith Park Section will lead a moderate level hike to some historic and conservation-related areas in the park.
The L.A. Conservancy believes that historic green spaces deserve preservation and protection as much as does the built environment of the city. The Conservancy’s program will consider such issues as: How does preserving historic green space protect and enrich human and non-human life, ecosystems, cultural heritage, and histories? How do public spaces like Griffith Park encourage diversity, equity, and inclusion? How can all of us protect green spaces through advocacy and engagement with organizations like the Sierra Club?
