Welcomed by a misty chill and the fresh scent of damp earth and pine needles, a hearty crowd gathered at Harwood on Saturday, October 23, 2010 to mark the lodge's 80th anniversary. The great thing about being at the lodge is that no matter the weather, everyone has great time. This day was no exception.
Lodge chair and vice-chair, Russ Hansen and Graeme Whitaker fired up the BBQ to grill hot dogs and burgers under overcast skies, while Liz Ward, Monalisa Ward, Mary Morales and Cathy Whitaker prepped side dishes and salads in the cozy kitchen. An anniversary cake with an edible color photo of the lodge was another big hit.
Arriving guests gathered around a crackling fire in the great room, reminiscing about potluck meals enjoyed in the wood-paneled dining room. With photos of John Muir and namesake, Aurelia Harwood looking over everyone, the feeling of community and camaraderie warmed the festivities.
Bob Cates and the Centennial Committee chose the occasion to hold their planning meeting for the coming year's Chapter festivities. Among these is a Centennial weekend at the lodge in June 2011. Look for the details in the spring Schedule of Activities and upcoming Southern Sierran issues.
For 80 years, Harwood Lodge has been open every weekend for Sierra Club members, their family and friends to enjoy, with 2 to 3 weekends always available with no reservations required. Other weekends are reserved by groups for special events that require pre-payment. Most are listed in the Schedule of Activities and/or the Southern Sierran. Overnight fees are still a bargain - $12 for members 12 years and older; $5 for those under 12; $15 for non-member guests.
The holidays are coming and Harwood is the place to be for the annual December cookie baking and tree-trimming weekend, the open holiday week between Christmas and New Year's, as well Sierra Singles' New Year's bash. Check the Calendar section of this issue for dates and details and make plans to spend a great time in the mountains at your own Sierra Club lodge!
