In our ongoing effort to reach out to new communities, the Angeles Chapter is proud to be participating in Earth Day South L.A. The event will be a celebration of community, culture and the environment. There will be healthy cooking demos, workshops on gardening & fruit tree pruning and local produce vendors, along with food vendors, music & dance performances and urban art exhibitions. Our booth will have information on environmental issues, as well as information on the Club's and Chapter's programs College Beat: UC Irvine and activities.

Community Services Unlimited, a non-profit group based in South L.A. with the mission of raising environmental awareness and promoting sustainability in South Los Angeles profiled in Southern Sierran in 2009, is one of the event's sponsors. A CSU representative describes the 'the purpose of Earth Day South L.A.' is 'to serve as a catalyst for residents to be agents of advancing sustainable change, improving the quality of our lives and advancing a more just society.' This is the second annual Earth Day South L.A. This year's theme is water.

Earth Day South L.A. will take place on Saturday, April 17, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Normandie Avenue Elementary School, 4505 S. Raymond Ave. in Los Angeles (corner of Normandie & Vernon). It is a family event, with no smoking or alcohol permitted.

More information about this event can be obtained from Earth Day South L.A.'s website.
