SIERRA CLUB ZERO WASTE ACTIVITIES & CIVIC AWARENESS:

Here are items where your voice and opinion can make a difference:

CLUB ZERO WASTE ACTIVITIES IN THE NEWS:

  • Amid Concerns, Council Allows Sidewalk Vendors, With Restrictions in Newport Beach Independent on November 30, 2018
"She held up small 'Serve on Request' cards that show plastic straws and cup lids, plastic utensils, condiment packets, and plastic bags that appear to be floating in water. Ip suggested that city staff hand out the “serve on request” card along with the permit. It would let the vendors practice voluntarily, she added. 'That would be the cheapest, easiest, quickest way to reduce trash at the source, Ip said."

  • Post-Coastal Cleanup, Let’s Focus on Microplastic, Sustainable Living in Laguna Beach Independent on September 20, 2018
"Most of the trash is plastic. Overtime it breaks down to microplastic, which is hard to be spotted, and nearly impossible to pick up. By gravity, wind or rain, it goes into the waterways. Then fish eat it. If it doesn’t kill the fish, chances are we kill the fish and eat the fish. The chemicals in our plastics end up in our bodies. It’s a catch 22."

  • The Village Green with Nancy Gardner in Newport Beach on September 8, 2018
At the Green on the Green Eco Expo, Hoiyin Ip talked about our ocean program: education through art, and reducing plastic consumption

  • Environmentalists seek less plastic use by restaurants in Newport in Daily Pilot on June 8, 2018
"Ip said the city could pass the word about plastics when it contacts restaurants during regular inspections, similar to how cities encourage restaurants to conserve water by offering glasses only on request. . . Mario Marovic, whose Newport Beach restaurant holdings include Malarky’s Irish Pub, Stag Bar + Kitchen and Dory Deli, said the reduction campaign is a 'great' idea."

  • Microfiber: Not a Micro Problem for Our Ocean in San Clemente Times on June 7, 2018
“This garment sheds plastic microfibers when washed, which contributes to marine plastic pollution.”

  • Celebrating Earth Month Forever in The Capistrano Dispatch on  April 13, 2018
"Just like our trash cans, our garages and our homes, Earth has limited space to store junk."

  • Give a Gift to Our Home in Southern Sierra on October 27, 2017
"If you don't live by the port of Long Beach or Los Angeles, you may not be aware that shipping containers of recyclables slated to make a return trip to China are piling up. China, which was taking more than 60% of our recyclables, wants no more junk."

  • Questioning Smoking in Dana Point Times on October 8, 2017
"Cigarette butts are the most common form of litter, are not biodegradable, find their way into the ocean, and effect the ecosystem and food chain. . . I don’t think of smokers any less. We all have bad habits and desires. I am for freedom, but freedom doesn’t overwrite responsibility."
