Dear Sierra Club Supporter,

The California coastline is threatened by a desalination facility proposed to create fresh water from the ocean. The California Coastal Commission will decide whether to permit the proposed project in Huntington Beach as early as July!

Desalinated water is significantly more expensive! Creating freshwater from saltwater is an expensive and energy-intensive process which contributes to climate change and sea level rise. The cost of producing this water would cause a rise in water bills for local ratepayers when there are more viable options.

The facility would harm the local marine environment and the Marine Protected Areas along our beautiful coast! Poseidon's outdated "once-through cooling" technology would suck in and kill fish and plankton that play a critical role in our coastal ecosystem. Operations at the plant would also produce a hyper-saline brine that degrades water quality and harms marine life.

We Need Your Voice: The proposed Poseidon Huntington Beach Desalination Facility should not be awarded a Coastal Development Permit. Coastal Commission, uphold your mission and oppose the Poseidon desalination plant.

Of interest...the proposed site for the facility is located in a tsunami runup zone, next to an earthquake fault and would use enough energy to power 30,000 homes! That contradicts the State of California's commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and efforts to phase out Once Through Cooling technology along our coast.

Tell the Coastal Commission to say NO to the proposed Poseidon Huntington Beach Desalination Facility!

Sign our petition today to send a strong message to the Coastal Commission and Poseidon.

Thank you for taking action to preserve, protect and enjoy the environment,

Charming Evelyn
Chair, Angeles Chapter Water Committee

P.S. We need your help at the upcoming Coastal Commission meeting. It is critical to have a good turnout to show that the public does not support this project. When you sign the petition, please let us know if you are interested in attending the meeting.

A desalination plant is not needed, what is needed is: 1) Increased public education related to water conservation 2) Cleaning up contaminated water

Need information on the Coastal Commision meeting. Where/when? May be able to attend.
