Come testify at a hearing against Newhall Ranch Phase 2 / Mission Village.
Join us to oppose Newhall Ranch's 2nd phase “Mission Village” development, proposed in one of the most sensitive parts of the Santa Clara River. On Tuesday, May 15th, the L.A. County Board of Supervisors will consider approving this development.
The Santa Clara River is L.A. County’s last free-flowing river and home to numerous endangered and threatened species.
Mission Village is a 4,200 unit tract that includes oil drilling property, endangered flower populations and sensitive river habitat. This proposal is part of the mega 21,000 unit Newhall Ranch development in the Santa Clarita Valley. Newhall Ranch would channelize or concrete 20 miles of the river and its tributaries. This auto-oriented project will increase global warming and air pollution.Sierra Club has opposed this project for over 15 years.

I oppose the approval of Mission Village proposal Agenda Item 25 and 26. Please forward my concerns to all Supervisors.

This area already contains thousands of housing units that have already been approved, but remain unbuilt. Therefore the Findings, Burden of Proof and over-riding considerations are legally inadequate to approve this project

Protect the Santa Clara River - L.A. County’s last free-flowing river and home to many endangered species from this development. Downstream floodplain impacts have not been adequately addressed for this project.

The project must meet chloride limits for the Santa Clara River.

New modeling of the ammonium perchlorate plume is needed to ensure safe drinking water. The pollution plume of from the Whittaker Bermite munitions facility is spreading and has caused the closure of another ground water well. Water slated for the Newhall Ranch project must be redirected to ensure clean water to the community of Santa Clarita.

The proposed project would have permanent detrimental impacts on the quality of life for residents in Los Angeles County. The Santa Clarita Valley already experiences some of the worst air quality in the nation. The additional traffic congestion created by this project will exacerbate the region’s poor air quality. This project will cause massive additional traffic and air pollution in an area already classified as "extremely hazardous" by US EPA.

Approval of this project is not fiscally responsible. The developer, Lennar/Newhall, recently emerged from bankruptcy. Hedge funds speculating in this land development own the majority of the project. The County should require bonding to ensure that the developer will build all infrastructure required for the project.
