Ski Mountaineering

Mt Williamson

May 10-11, 2008

This is a preliminary trip report on climbing and skiing Mt Williamson. Hopefully, more details will follow soon.

This last weekend Scott Siegrist, Cedric Ma, and myself climbed and skied Mt Williamson -- the 2nd highest mountain in California -- via the North Fork of Bairs Creek. That's over 9.2K of vertical and over 26 hours of bushwhacking, route finding, hiking, climbing, and skiing in 2 days. A very adventurous and challenging route and mountain.

John Moynier, the author of "Backcountry Skiing California's High Sierra" describes this route as "a little masochistic" under these conditions. There is probably some truth to that statement in most people's eyes.

It was, however, a very big beautiful mountain with very impressive views to those who attain its summit.
