Join us for a leisurely 2 mi moonlight walk along the Los Angeles River on a walking path. This part of the LA River has undergone a beautification project for walking, jogging and pet strolling. We'll listen to the music of the river while we talk. We'll see a couple of interesting creatures and the halfway point takes us to the back of CBS Studios. Although we may need to bundle up, we'll stay warm with the great company of each other. Afterwards we'll go to a local coffee shop for dessert and hot drinks. 2 hrs. Meet 6:30 pm at the intersections of Valleyheart Dr & Whitsett Ave (Christian Science Church, 4032 Whitsett Ave, Studio City, residential parking behind the church). "New San Gabriel Mtns Wilderness Areas." Join one of our most ardent and committed Sierra Club activists, Juana Torres, to learn all about the 2009 campaign to protect millions of acres of wilderness across the United States that also created almost 40,000 acres of new wilderness right here in the San Gabriel Mtns. The Omnibus Public Lands Management Act, passed in March 2009, was historic public lands legislation. Juana was one of the San Gabriel Mtns Forever campaign supporters who helped make this happen! Current conservation news and announcements will begin the meeting. Everyone is welcome. 6:30 pm refreshments, 7 pm program at LA Zoo in Griffith Park (follow Sierra Singles signs to meeting room—front gate closes promptly at 7:30 pm, please arrive early). After a couple days rest from bringing in the New Year, join us for this 6 mi rt, 4 hr walk along the Los Angeles River and a picnic lunch afterwards. Though this walk is close to major thoroughfares, we will enjoy the scenic Glendale Narrows, the central and longest natural area of the LA River, the variety of birds, and each others' company. Afterwards we will go to the Bette Davis Picnic Area to enjoy our lunches. This is part of a series of LA River walks that will eventually take us to the Pacific Ocean. Meet 9 am intersection of Riverside Dr, Victory Blvd and Sonora Ave (the Bette Davis Picnic Area). Rain within 2 days cancels. This mountaintop mission-style retreat in Simi Valley, CA has sweeping views of mountains, valleys and the Pacific Ocean. Join us for a 4 mi Full Snow/Hunger Moon moonlight walk through CSUN, a 356-acre campus in the heart of San Fernando Valley. We'll see what this campus is about during a quiet time. And though the moon has these names, we're pretty sure we'll be safe from the snow and not go hungry as we walk about CSUN. Afterwards we'll go for dessert and hot drinks. 3 hrs.  O: Black Hills Adventure:
Explore South Dakota's fabulous Black Hills. Custer State Park is world-renowned for its large buffalo herd and, at this time of year, we can expect to see a lot of buffalo calves. Bring your camera and binoculars as pronghorn antelope, prairie dogs, elk, deer, wild burros, and mountain goats inhabit the park and are often visible. A jeep safari to the buffalo herds followed by a chuckwagon BBQ will round out the experience. Other highlights include Mt Rushmore, Crazy Horse Memorial, Jewel Cave and/or Wind Cave, hiking around Devils Tower and an optional trip to the Badlands. Includes 6 nights lodging in South Dakota; transportation from Rapid City to the Black Hills and return and all transportation in the Black Hills; admission fees to all group activities; and happy hours, for $1150 with SC#/$1225 non-member.
