Listed below you will see a listing of our various outings. Many details have been omitted for the sake of brevity. If reservations are required, make your reservations early! These outings often fill up fast. Also, if you have any questions about whether or not you have the proper skills, conditioning, or equipment, please Contact the Leader.

O: Caspers Wilderness Park, West Ridge Loop:
  A‘Mikes’s Hike” 4 mi rt, 400' gain.  Enjoy views of Saddleback, Coto, etc from West Ridge and return thru cathedral groves of oak trees.  Meet 7:30 am Bell Cyn prkg lot at the far N end of Bell Cyn Rd, Caspers Park.  Bring water, lugsoles, cap or hat, sun screen.  Car fee $5 at Park entrance.  Ldr: Mike Sappingfield.  Asst: Wendy Liu.  W C


JUN 11                        WED   Sierra Sage of S OC, OC SIERRA SINGLES, ORANGE COUNTY
O: SUPERBOOT XVIII—PALM SPRINGS TO HUMBER PARK

JUN 14                        SAT    SIERRA SAGE OF S OC, OC SIERRA SINGLES
O: SAN GABRIEL PEAK (6161’)
:  4 mi rt, 1200' gain.  Hike from Eaton Saddle to Markham Saddle to San Gabriel Peak.  From there hike ¼ mile to 1950’s era Nike base on Mt. Disappointment and return.  Meet 7 am at N OC rideshare or 8 am at La Canada rideshare, or 8:30 at Eaton Saddle.  (To get to Eaton Saddle, drive up the Angeles Crest Hwy 14 mi from La Canada to Eaton Saddle, turn R on Mt. Wilson Rd, go 2.5 mi to Eaton Saddle).  Optional side trip to Mt. Wilson Observatory.  Lugsole boots, lunch, 2 qts. water, jacket, hat, 10 essentials.  Ldr: Todd Clark.  Asst: Russ Brown.  H E mountain


JUNE 15-21    SIERRA SAGE OF S OC, SIERRA SINGLESO: BLACK HILLS ADVENTURE:  Explore South Dakota’s fabulous Black Hills, including seeing the buffalo roaming and the deer and antelope playing along the winding Wildlife Loop Drive in Custer State Park.  Includes visiting Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse Memorial, Jewel Cave and/or Wind Cave, hike in the Black Hills, and the historic gold mining town of Deadwood.  Includes 6 nights lodging in S Dakota, transportation from Rapid City to the Black Hills and return, all transportation in the Black Hills, admission to all group activities, several happy hours.  $995 with SC#/$1050 for non-member.  Participants are responsible for transportation to and from Rapid City and all meals.  For complete information, itinerary and application, send 2 SASE to Ldr: Mike Sappingfield:  Co-Ldr: Russ Hansen


JUN 28                        SAT    SIERRA SAGE OF S OC, OC SIERRA SINGLES
O: MT BALDY (10,064’) WITH A LIFT
:  Strenuous 8 mi, 2500’ gain/3800’ loss.  We shall ride the chair lift to Baldy Notch, then hike 3.5 mi via Devils Backbone to the peak and descend steeply via the ski hut to Manker Flt.  Short shuttle.  Meet 7:30 am at Tustin rideshare pt or 8:15 am at Mt Baldy rideshare.  Prepare with hikes on Mar 29 and Apr 26.  Bring 2 qts water, lunch, lugsoles, $ for chairlift.  Ldr: Todd Clark.  Asst: Russ Brown.  H E mountain


JUL 05                        SAT     SIERRA SAGE
O: BEACH HIKE, DOHENY TO SAN CLEMENTE OR TRESTLES
:  No gain, 5 mi to the pier or 9 mi to Trestles.  Return by bus from either place.  Enjoy the beach scenes and new trail along railroad.  Meet 8:30am Doheny Bch State Park Rd at Dana Harbor Dr, 1 block W of PCH in Dana Point.  Park 1 block uphill from meet location.  Bring water, hat, sunscreen, lunch (or buy at pier).   Ldr: Dave Taylor.  Asst: Sylvia Stevenson.


JUL 06                        SUN     SIERRA SAGE, EASY HIKERS
O: HIKE, HOLY JIM FALLS
:  A “Mike’s Hike”.  4 mi rt.  Join us for a moderately paced hike through a shady canyon to a local waterfall.  Who knows, there might even be water this late.  Meet 8 am at dirt parking area south of bridge where Plano Trabuco/Live Oak Canyon Road crosses Trabuco Creek in Trabuco Canyon.  We will carpool in to the trailhead.  FSP required at trailhead if you drive your own vehicle beyond the meeting place.  Rain cancels.  Bring water, munchies, hat, mosquito repellant, and sunscreen.  Ldr: Mike Sappingfield.  Asst: Duana Miller.   E


JUL 12                        SAT     SIERRA SAGE
O: BIKE RIDE, NEWPORT BACK BAY TO BALBOA ISLAND
:  30 mi rt, 200’ gain.  Scenic South Orange County bike tour south from East bluff drive overlook to Balboa Island , Back Bay Rd, Bayside Dr to Corona Del Mar beach bluff tops, Crystal Cove State Park bike trail and, finally, a short ride along PCH and back to Balboa Island for coffee and snacks, then return.  Meet 9 am at north end of Backbay drive and Eastbluff drive.  From the 405 or 73 toll Road go south on Jamboree and turn right on Eastbluff Drive.  Limited group size.  Contact Ldr: Russ Brown.  Asst: Sylvia Stevenson.  C E


JUL 19                        SAT     SIERRA SAGE, OCSS
O: HIKE, QUAIL HILL PRESERVE
:  Moderate pace 6 miles rt, 200' gain/loss.  Walk along Quail Hill Preserve from Sand Canyon to Turtle Rock in Irvine, with views of valley and mountains.  Meet 8 am at the Quail Hill Preserve.  Take 405 south and exit at Sand Canyon.  Turn right at offramp and head west on Sand Canyon.  After roundabout, take second entrance on right.  Bring 1 quart water, snack, walking shoes, hat, sunscreen.  Return by lunchtime.  Rain cancels.  Ldr: Sylvie Cote.  Asst:  Todd Clark.  E C


JUL 26                        SAT     SIERRA SAGE, FRIENDS OF THE FOOTHILLS
O: WALK, TRESTLES BEACH
:  3 mi rt, 100' gain.  Enjoy this walk to the famous surfing beach at Trestles and the extensive wetlands area through which San Mateo Creek flows.  We will discuss the ecological importance of the surrounding area and the damage that the proposed Foothill S Toll Rd would do to the State Beach.  Meet 8:30 am Trestles Surfers’ parking lot.  Bring water; sturdy comfortable shoes, hat, sunscreen.  Rain cancels.  Ldr: Robin Everett.  Asst: Paul Carlton.  C E
