Our activities are open to the general public as well as Sierra Club members unless otherwise noted in the write-up. In order to participate on one of the Sierra Club's outings, you will need to sign a liability waiver. If you would like to read a copy of the waiver prior to the outing, please see Chapter and Group Outings Liability Waiver Form or call (415) 977-5528.

In the interest of facilitating the logistics of some outings, it is customary that participants make carpooling arrangements. The Sierra Club does not have insurance for carpooling arrangements and assumes no liability for them. Carpooling ride sharing or anything similar is strictly a private arrangement among the participants. Participants assume the risks associated with this travel.

Rating Explanation
C For events under external control of a non-Sierra Club entity (i.e. concessionaire)
O Applies to a variety of uncomplicated outings (i.e., city walks, bike rides, trail hikes, backpacking). May involve simple off trail hiking not requiring navigation skills. Climbing level: Class 1 terrain
I Includes outings that involve cross-country travel where navigation is necessary. Rougher ground than "O" outings may be traversed, and the use of hands for balance may be necessary. Includes outings that have snow travel or skiing on easy terrain. Climbing level: Class 2 terrain
M Includes Moderate level climbing: Class 3 terrain. On rock, the hands are used for climbing. Some participants may want a safety belay. On snow, safety dictates the use of ice axes and the ability to self-arrest
E More exposed than an M outing. Climbing on Class 4 terrain. Rock climbs will use a rope for all in the party. On snow, steeper terrain than M outings is permissible, and safety dictates the use of crampons

A social hike in San Pedro. Not for tigers. Wear sturdy shoes for dirt trails. Hike to the bluffs overlooking Catalina Channel. On a clear night we can see the lights of Avalon. Aug 22-24 - Fri-Sun I: Royce Peak (12,280'), Merriam Peak (13,103')
SPS Intro Trip suitable for WTC students. Join leaders for moderately fast-paced 3 day backpack and climb in the John Muir Wilderness Area/Kings Canyon National Park. Start Fri. by hiking up to Upper Pine Lake: 5 mi, 3,000' gain. Possible ascent of Julius Caesar (13,200') 9 mi RT, 3,000' gain. Sat climb Royce and Merriam from Saddle between, 10 mi RT, 4,000' gain. Sun backpack out and return to LA. While not for beginners, this trip is suitable for people who already have some other XC trips under their boots. Some naturalizing along the way as time permits. Aug 24 - Sun O: Channel Islands National Park Santa Rosa Island
White sand beaches, rolling grasslands, canyon groves of oak, ironwood and Torrey pines, seals, island foxes, elk, deer and over 195 species of birds are some of the many surprises awaiting your discovery as you explore S.R. Island. Your time ashore can be spent on a nature hike (led by a National Park Service ranger), exploring the shoreline, or simply relaxing. Your cruise to and from the island will be highlighted with frequent sightings of marine mammals and a spectacular view deep inside the Painted Cave of Santa Cruz Island. Island Packer tours emphasize the joy of discovery and adventure, along with a friendly and enthusiastic crew. Weather is often unpredictable. Dress in layers, wear sturdy non-skid shoes. Protect your camera and food in plastic bags. Bring picnic lunch to enjoy on the island and plenty of water. Bring snacks for the trip home. You will be hungry. Aug 30-Sep 2 - Sat-Tue O: Mammoth Lakes and Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest Trip
Come hike in California's beautiful Sierra Nevada Mountains, have fun, meet new people and enjoy a grand adventure to Mammoth in the summer. Multiple hikes will be offered each day. En route home on Tue, we'll visit the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest in the White Mountains (10,000') where we will hike amongst twisted and gnarled 4,000 year old pine trees that are the oldest known living trees on earth. Oct 17-18 - Fri-Sat O: Palm Springs Tram (8,450'), Mt. San Jacinto (10,804') Moonlight Hike (Sponsor: Hundred Peaks Section)
Strenuous hike for tigers only via the Skyline Trail, 10 mi, 8300' gain to tram with additional 10 mi rt, 2400' gain to the peak. We'll start hiking before midnight Friday. With the advent of the moonlight aspect of the hike, we've been getting many more successful peak baggers, so we'll have two groups, hopefully both SJ bound, one faster, the other naturalizing along the way. Of course, any who wish can head back down at the tram after a mere 8300' gain. Bring money for tram ride and taxi back to cars. Oct 22 - Wed: Quarterly Meeting: The Great African Primate Expedition.
Jackie Childers and her expert movie making travel companion, Jackie Baird-Bunker, will take us on an adventure through Uganda, presenting magnificent sights such as a Trek through Uganda's rainforests to find the rare and elusive mountain gorillas in their natural habitat, visit a chimpanzee orphanage and observe chimps in the wild in Kibale Forest, you will see how they learned to help save Africa''s primates through the ecotourism efforts that serve to protect them. They also had the pleasure of seeing many other primates such as colobus and other monkeys, and exotic animals. They got to see hippos, crocodiles, baboons and myriad birds and also spotted lion, buffalo, elephants and diverse antelopes, and many other animals. On a visit to caves they observed thousands of bats. Join us at the Peninsula Center Library Community Room, 701 Silver Spur Rd. (access also from Deep Valley), Rolling Hills Estates. Join us on a moderate 8 mi, 1500' gain hike up Sawpit Canyon to Deer Park on the Ben Overturff Trail. Meet at Monrovia Canyon Park entrance at 8am ($5.00 parking fee). Bring snacks and water. Lunch in Monrovia after the hike for those interested. Rain cancels. Directions: Exit Foothill Fwy (I-210) at Myrtle Ave in Monrovia. Drive North on Myrtle, through town, 1.8 miles to Scenic Drive. Turn right and follow Scenic Drive, with short jogs right, then left, curving north as Scenic Drive becomes Canyon Blvd., to Monrovia Canyon Park entrance station (map). On this and the following Saturday we will explore EVERY stairway in the Silver Lake/Echo Park area of LA. Explore unique neighborhoods with origins in LA's past. This day: 22 stairways, 1500+ steps, 3000' gain, 9 mi. rt. Moderate pace to enjoy the surroundings but climbing the stairs IS strenuous. No beginners or tigers. Bring good walking shoes, water, sunscreen, hat and snack. Meet 8am at the Silver Lake Recreation Center, 1850 W Silver Lake Dr. From the 101 (Hollywood) Fwy, take Silver Lake Blvd N 1.3 mi. Or bring a book and read next to the large warm spring fed swimming pool and look over the majestic Panamint Mountains, or visit Scotty's Castle, or take a horseback ride or play golf. Saturday the bus drops us off on the Plateau overlooking Anza Borrego State Park. We then hike down, overlooking the whole valley. We finish the hike by walking right into the resort, where our luggage, room, swimming pool, large Jacuzzi and happy hour await us. Sunday we hike in the park, offering both long and short hikes. Monday we visit our recent discovery, Ladder and Painted Cyn. in the Mecca Wilderness. Climb Ladder through a slot canyon then see views of the Salton Sea before we drop down into the Canyon fractured by the San Andreas Fault.
