Acquiring and Preserving Banning Ranch
Banning Ranch consists of 412 acres of privately owned wetlands and adjacent bluffs with a beautiful panoramic view that stretches from the Huntington Beach Pier to the Newport Beach Harbor with the Palos Verdes peninsula and Catalina Island in the distance.
The Sierra Club supports public acquisition of Banning Ranch as an open space and wilderness park. The Sierra Club encourages public involvement to collaborate with government and non-profit groups for purchasing the land for conservation. Following public acquisition, the Sierra Club recommends Banning Ranch be merged with the adjacent Orange Coast River Park.
History of the Campaign
This campaign began in 1999 when Orange County residents Terry Welsh and James Quigg became concerned that developers were planning on building 1,750 homes on the Banning Ranch property. The volunteers contacted the Sierra Club for assistance in preserving Banning Ranch; the Sierra Club responded to the volunteers’ request by creating the Banning Ranch Park and Preserve Campaign.
In June 2004, the Banning Ranch vision board, which depicts with graphics and illustrations the Sierra Club’s vision for the Banning Ranch area, was unveiled at a meeting of about 100 community residents. The Sierra Club’s vision board for Orange County will visually explain the aspirations and goals of the Banning Ranch Park and Preserve Campaign as part of a countywide scheme.
