In Memoriam
Bonnie Sharpe passed away on February 3, 2012, at the age of 64, after a long battle with a brain tumor, stroke and metastatic cancer.
Bonnie was born in New York, where she married, then came to California and later divorced. She attended Cal State Fullerton, where she studied anthropology and became the first female Associated Student Body President. At that time, the women’s gymnastics team had a yearly budget of only $380, and Bonnie said that was because they were girls and not boys. She fought for more money, every year, until the CSF women’s gymnastic team won the National Championship. After that, the money came a little easier. After obtaining her MA in archeology, Bonnie decided to become an engineer. She worked for Bell Telephone, now ATT, in the construction department for many years.
But Bonnie’s real love remained archeology and nature. In the 1980s, she organized service trips to Chaco Canyon, New Mexico, for the Sierra Club. This was her favorite place, where she wanted to help the Park Service to protect the area. Later, the same volunteer teams, coming back year after year, worked on other archeological sites in New Mexico, outside of Chaco Canyon. Her trips were very popular; they immediately sold out, bringing up to 40 people at a time to spend their vacations working in the sun and heat alongside professional archeologists to preserve ancient Native American structures. They also helped the Park Service building campgrounds to be used by other visitors to these sites. In the evenings, her groups gathered around a campfire for songs. Bonnie also worked to document the many petroglyphs in caves and on rock walls near Sedona, Arizona. She remained active in the Sierra Club for many years serving on Ex Com and was at one time Chair of the Angeles Chapter.
Bonnie had the ability to bring people together; she could work politically to get permissions for her extraordinary trips and was always helpful. Throughout her life she successfully fought for her ideals. She truly was an outstanding person. Bonnie is survived by her two sons and two grandchildren.

Convenient Electric Cars in San Diego
In November, San Diego became the first city in the world to offer an all-electric CAR2GO service. The idea of renting a car without paperwork hassle for an hour or a day was first tested in Ulm, Germany in 2008, and has since expanded to several cities in Europe and North America. In San Diego, an extensive fleet is located throughout the greater downtown area and can be accessed "on-demand" or booked 24 hours in advance. The service is provided with a free-floating network of 300 Smart fortwo EDs that are available on-demand for point-to-point trips. Unlike traditional carsharing programs, car2go is not station-based. The members may use the vehicle for as long as they like, without committing to a specific return time or return location. The driver can finish the rental in any available public parking space within the business area or at one of the specially marked car2go spaces. Charges are based on minutes used and include fuel, insurance, parking and maintenance. The per hour maximum is $12.99 plus tax; the daily maximum is $65.99 plus tax. There is a one-time registration fee of $35. Car2Go is a subsidiary of Daimler AG.
