OMC formal communication to ECC

OMC wishes to thank ECC for their tireless efforts in automating Angeles processes and enabling some of our communications. By this motion OMC wishes to communicate to ECC that OMC is moving in a different direction with respect to web publishing of outings and will not be utilizing the software product known as OMS but, instead, as decided on an alternative product currently called AWESOME. However we will still need ECC support in integrating AWESOME into the Chapter web structure to meet our April 2010 schedule commitment of chapter-wide outings automation implementation. Motion made - 1/2/2009, polls closed 11/6/2009, Communication and ECC notified 11/7/2009:

Diversity TF Report:

  1. The Diversity Council will present its pilot training program "Diversity 101" for the Angeles Chapter on Saturday, January 30, 2010. Time and place to be determined.

Diversity 101: Core Concepts and Their Relevance to the Sierra Club
    Saturday, January 30, 2010
    Los Angeles , California

    • How is diversity relevant to the Sierra Club's mission?
    • Does your Sierra Club meeting reflect the diversity of the surrounding communities?
    • What does diversity have to do with you?

If these questions interest you, please join us for an interactive, one-day session designed provide local Club grassroots leaders with a unique shared learning opportunity. In this session, you will:

    • Learn new language and frameworks to demystify and promote diversity and inclusion
    • Gain insights into the dynamics that impact organizational success and the ability to sustain diverse partnerships
    • Build your skills for engaging volunteers from a wide range of backgrounds
    • Deepen your connection to other members of the Club while learning how to attract new members

We will discuss how diversity plays out at different levels of society - in personal interactions, between groups of people, at the organizational level, and within movements. And we will focus on the role all of us play within the Club, to create a thriving organization that will continue to succeed well into the future.

Registration: To register or obtain more information, please contact Juana Torres at juana.torres@sierraclub.org or 213-387-6528 x226. Registrations will be accepted on a rolling basis until January 13, 2010. We encourage you to register early as the session is designed for hands-on learning and the number of participants is limited.

Facilitator: This session will be facilitated by staff of Diversity Matters: changing the culture of change, who have many years of experience working with a wide array of institutions in the environmental field on how to integrate equity, diversity, and inclusion into all facets of their operations and programs.

This session is organized and sponsored by the Sierra Club's Diversity Council as the pilot version of a proposed introductory diversity and inclusion learning session to be provided to Club grassroots leaders.

  2. The February 2010 issue of the Southern Sierran will be themed "Celebrating Diversity in Honor of Black History Month." (A big THANK YOU to Elizabeth Saas for doing this!) If you have an idea for an article for this issue, please contact me or Elizabeth.
  3. The "Tuesday Hiking Club", which is comprised of members of the local Korean hiking community, recently donated $1,000 to the Angeles Forest Restoration Project to help with post-Station Fire recovery.
