Reports

LTC report:

  1. We had 51 new leader candidates at the April 4th seminar in Costa Mesa.
  2. Next LTP seminar is Saturday, October 3, at Griffith Park.
  3. At its meeting on March 30th, LTC voted to change the requirement for the evaluating assistant leader on a provisional outing. This is what we accepted: "Provisional leader evaluators shall have been rated at or above the level of the trip for two years or have a requisite body of experience as determined by the LTC and Safety Committee." This will appear on the LTC web site (newly reformatted to resemble other Angeles Chapter web sites) and will be sent to the outings chairs list serve.

Tina

The first major group of Sierra Club members who are due to re-certify has set a date already. I have restocked my supplies and books and will look forward to setting up more classes during this year at the Chapter headquarters and off at other locations. I really appreciate all the support I have received from staff, officers and members. My main goal is to provide re-certification classes as well as teaching First Aid with a comparison of Urban and Wilderness aspects plus a discussion of Altitude Sickness. A good review of First Aid may save someones life on the trail, at home or at work. To set up classes contact me at hatbsa@sbcglobal.net or call me at 310-418-9844.

Diversity Task Force:

In late February, I led an outing, sponsored by LA ICO, for a group known as LULAC -- the League of United Latin American Citizens. I took 15 high school students, a few parents and some staff members from LULAC's National Education Service Center in East L.A. up to the San Gabriel mountains for a day of snow play. For most of the participants, it was the first tme they had seen the snow.

The next day, under the guidance of Angeles Chapter staffer Juana Torres, the same group of students wrote letters to their congressman in support of protecting the San Gabriels. Obviously, the letter-writing would have had little meaning for the students if they had never seen the San Gabriels up close.

An article about these events is on the Club's Grassroots website.

I then learned that the Club's Representative for Latino Partnerships, Isabel Long, was already beginning to cultivate a relationship with LULAC on a national level. LULAC recently held a conference in Washington, D.C., the slogan of which was Si Se Puede Ser Verde! (Yes, We Can Be Green!) and approached the Club to get more information on green issues. I am now in frequent contact with Isabel and we are working together to further this relationship with LULAC.

I have also been in contact with the Club's National Diversity Council. The Council, whose members are from across the country, recently had its meeting here in Los Angeles and I had the opportunity to have dinner with them. They were pleasantly surprised to learn that the Angeles Chapter has a Diversity Task Force and that we are actively working to diversify the Chapter. Among their projects, the Council is working on developing materials that can be used for teaching cultural sensitivity and other diversity-related topics. [Maybe a break-out session for a future Outings Assembly?]

The Diversity Council is having an "open house" conference call on Tuesday, April 14, at 5pm Pacific time. I plan to participate in the call. If anyone else is interested, the dial-in number is (866) 501-6174. Please RSVP in advance at Conference Call RSVP.
