DAY AT MOUNTAIN HIGH
C: Every dark cloud has a
silver lining, and this year's gloomy rains have produced
the best skiing conditions in Southern California since the
El Nino season of 97-98. Let's take advantage of this with
a day of skiing or snowboarding at the closest Ski Resort in
the West, Mountain High, just 1 hr 15 minutes from both Los
Angeles and Orange County, with virtually no mountain
driving. The resort is divided into east and west sections
- both with plenty of trails from beginners to advanced
skiers. The east section is geared more toward skiers and
has fewer snowboarders, so take your pick. Let's get there
early for a full day on the slopes! Meet at North Orange

hills of this classic California landscape of wind-rippled
grasses, statuesque oaks, trickling streams and nearly 500
different native plants. Moderately paced, 7½ mile rt, 650'
elevation gain/loss hike through Engelmann oak woodlands to
the Vernal Pool Trail, Punta Mesa Trail, Vista Grande Trail
for views of the snow dusted peaks of the San Bernardino and
San Jacinto mountains. Possible early spring flowers in

of route may be in pre-existing tracks, but recent snowfall,

30s Anza-Borrego Desert Car Camp and Hiking
O: The Anza Borrego Desert, the
largest state park in the US, presents some of the most
interesting and diverse landscapes around. With varied
hiking trails offering scenery, challenge, and history, the
desert teems with wildflowers during the spring. At night
the dark desert sky gives us a million star lightshow. Join
us for an overnight trip to this unique place. We will do
two or three moderate hikes of about 3-5 miles, enjoy
programs at the visitor center, learn about pioneer history,
and tell stories around the campfire in our group
campground. Limited to 20 participants, ages 18-39 please.
We will meet Saturday morning at 8:30 at the North Orange
County Carpool Point and return Sunday evening. Bring Lunch
for Saturday and cash for dinner on Sunday night in the

MAR 22 Sierra Sage GENERAL MEETING:
HISTORIAN ADAM COLLINGS
Best selling author and historian Adam
Collings will be presenting a program based on his recently
released book, California/West of the West, at our March 22
gathering of Sierra Sage. Noted for his extensive research
and attention to detail, Collings will offer us a
well-documented view of Southern California as it appeared
before the advent of Western civilization, sharing
observations made about flora, fauna, and the cultures
encountered by the first Europeans to arrive upon the scene.
Backed up with rarely viewed or studied primary source
material provided by private collectors, the Franciscan
Order and the Southwest Museum, this evening promises not
only entertaining but course-altering insight and
information. Collings is a resident of San Clemente, docent
at Mission San Juan Capistrano and in Walt Disney’s Barn,
and a member of the Huntington Westerners, California
Mission Studies Association and Mormon History Association.
He will be available to sign copies of California/ West of
the West immediately following his presentation. Don’t miss
an engaging evening with one of California’s premiere
historians.

adventure in Aliso-Wood Canyons Regional Park, the largest
park in the hills above Laguna Beach. Bike the first 1.5
miles to the trailhead (either mountain bikes or standard
bicycles will do), then hike 6 miles in the park. Visit Old
Corral, Sycamore Grove and Five Oaks Canyon before returning
to your bike for riding the last 1.5 miles back to your car.
Meet 9 am at the park.. (From I-5 take Alicia Pkwy exit.
Proceed west for 4 miles. ¼ mile past Aliso Creek Rd turn
right on the park service road crossing over a bridge. The

Sunday evening. Monday AM travel by bus to Creel,
Chihuahua, Mexico, gateway to the Copper Canyon region.
Spend three nights at Lodge in Creel. Hike with leaders to
Humira and the Incised Meanders of the Urique River,
Cusarare Falls and Rekowata Hot Springs or explore on your
own. Descend on a road with breath taking vistas to the
bottom of the spectacular Barranca Urique to spend three
nights at the unique Riverside Inn in Batopilas. Hike with
leaders to the mysterious Satevo Mission and side canyons in
the Batopilas area or just laze in the river or explore on
your own. Return to Creel for one last day to explore and

Meet Sat 8:15 AM at Living Desert Museum in Palm Desert. We
will enter park and hike up Eisenhower Mountain (5 miles,
approx 1,000' gain). Bring sack lunch and water to enjoy at
picnic area. Return to view animals and shows. In
afternoon, check into Palm Springs hotel (special estimated
rate: $65, $33 pp) and drive to leaders home overlooking
Palm Springs for swimming, happy hour, and barbeque.

Cornell Peak (9750') & San Jacinto Peak (10,804')
I: (OCSS / WTC): Snow camping
and peak climbing trip in the San Jacinto Wilderness. 4 mi,
1500' gain the first day from the Palm Springs Tram, most
with full backpack while on snowshoes. 7 mi of peak
climbing, 2000' gain with snowshoes and daypacks the second
day, before we pack out 2.5 mi to the tram. Participants
should expect to traverse and climb snow-covered slopes. WTC

Cruz Island
O: Pristine beaches, lonely canyons, grass-covered
hills and some animals and plants that you have never seen
before. Join us for the weekend on this unique island.
Leave early Sat morning from Ventura Harbor, return late Sun
afternoon. Camp under shady Eucalyptus trees, enjoy day
hikes to check out the island's unique flora and fauna the
best time of the year when the wildflowers are in bloom.
Look for sea stars in the tide pools of Smugglers Cove or
the island scrub jay in Scorpion Canyon. Visit a plane wreck
on the hilltop, climb up to Cavern Pt for beautiful view of
the shoreline. Visit the historic ranch house or just relax
under the Eucalyptus trees. You are sure to enjoy this
paradise island, the largest of the Channel Islands. The
camping is a ¼ mile walk from the anchorage. Drinking water
and toilets are available, but no showers. Includes

Class Session #1 Join us as we
prepare to venture out on the trails and campgrounds of our
local mountains and learn the basics of camping and
backpacking. No experience necessary. Learn from Sierra
Club leaders and seasoned backpackers exactly what you need
to ensure an enjoyable, exciting time hiking and camping in
the outdoors starting with equipment, where to rent or buy,
how to dress, cook, pitch a tent, deal with weather
challenges and pack your backpack. You will also learn
about conditioning, traveling on different terrains, safety
and environmental issues. Complete the class with one or
two introductory backpacks. Sierra Club approved leaders
will be teaching and leading the outings as well as sharing
their "tips and tricks" learned over the years.You will have
the opportunity to practice your new skills in a safe
environment, try out different equipment and make new
friends. Cost for the full class is $40 for SC members, $45
for non-members. You will be required to supply your own
gear, though rental options and equipment sharing will be

Since I couldn't get on a similar hike, I'll do it
myself with other myselfers. We take the Palm Springs
tram ($21 rt), hike to Round Valley Camp, then to Cornell
Pk-4mi, 1400' gain trail and XC. Sunday the remaining -10
mi, 3200' gain trail and XC and then out. Snow conditions
(if any) will dictate details/routes/objectives. Send sase,

MOUNTAINS – BEAR CANYON TRAIL CAMP
O: Moderately paced 8 mile rt,
1000' gain/loss hike in the Arroyo Seco area. Get away from
civilization into a remote area in the wilderness, so far
yet so close. Hike along a stream, among huge spruces, and
view cascades and wildflowers along the way. Meet at 8:00
AM in La Canada carpool point. 10½ mile drive to Switzer
parking area. Always bring water (2 quarts recommended),
lug soles, sunscreen, snack/lunch, 10 essentials. Rain will

GLACIERS, CHAPTER FUNDRAISER
C/O: Answer the call of the wild with
your pioneer spirit as we explore the land John Muir said

Chapter and Orange County Sierra Singles on the luxurious
Dawn Princess as we head north from Vancouver, Canada to the

Bohlka, Senior Chapter Director of our Angeles Chapter, and
Sierra Club outings leader John Lajeuness for a unique look
at Costa Rica, one of the most diverse bio-regions on the
planet. Jack will present some of his fine art prints for
display and will offer practical tips that you can use to
take great photographs on your next trip. John Lajeuness
will share with us the incredible opportunities we have to
see the world on a budget with experienced Sierra Club
leaders. Find out how you can travel to exotic places to
meet local people and avoid the typical tourist traps!

Thu-Sun Mammoth Lakes Hike/Bus Trip
O: Join us on a 4-day, 3-night trip to Mammoth Lakes "where
summer is as close to mountain heaven as it gets." Hiking
in and around Mammoth is a summer signature. Join OCSS
leader-guided hikes or explore the area on your own. Take a
gondola for spectacular views, visit Minaret Summit, Devil's
Postpile and Rainbow Falls. Relax, read, swim, spa, or
participate in a scheduled activity. Leave Thursday am from

Natural and Wild Florida ANGELES CHAPTER FUNDRAISER
O: Join us for the repeat of
our very popular Florida trips over the Thanksgiving holiday
with two days added from the original trip, now 10 days, 10
nights! We will experience more attractions than our last
fun-filled trip. See the natural and wild Florida on this
bus trip co-hosted by the Florida Sierra Club Chapter. We
will visit Everglades National Park, Florida Keys, a Coral
Reef, Big Pine Key--home of the endangered Key Deer,
Homosassa & Crystal Rivers--the Manatees’ winter home, Crane
Point tropical hardwood forest, Bird Sanctuary, Fakahatchee
Strand State Preserve, Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary, Sanibel
Island, Shark Valley wildlife refuge, Homosassa Springs
Wildlife Park, miles of beautiful seashore, some forest
areas, and more. Great opportunity to see alligators,
unique birds, endangered Florida wildlife, such as Manatees
and Key Deer, tropical fish and other coral reef inhabitants
in their natural settings, and the unique and threatened
wild areas of Florida with naturalists and rangers on many
