Intermediate XC Lessons/ Downhill/Nordic Ski/Snowshoe Trip

Feb 6                     Sun                                        Shady Rest XC Ski Tour

O: Beginner/Low intermediate XC Ski Tour.  Up to 6 miles round trip, 7,800' elevation, 200' gain/loss through the forest over fairly level terrain.  The tour begins across from the Forest Ranger Station.  Bring 10 essentials, metal-edged skis, water and lunch.  Ski tour conducted in conjunction with OCSS Mammoth Combo trip Feb 4 - 6.  Provisional Ski Leader: Ana Cadez. FEB 5-6                 SAT-SUN                            Backcountry Ski Tour in Sequoia National Monument

Feb 5-6     Sat-Sun                    Whale Peak (5349'), Asbestos Mt. (5265')

I: (HPS, OC Sierra Singles): On Saturday we hike Whale, approx 9-mi 2300' gain cross-country with bouldering and lots of cactus in Anza-Borrego State Park.  Car camp in the park Sat night, State Park use/parking fee applicable. Sun am drive to Asbestos for a short 3-mi, 1000' gain hike in desert terrain approx 2-3 hrs r/t.  Rain cancels.  Email mldaley@aol.com with conditioning and rideshare info to Ldrs: Robert and Markey Neighbors.


FEB 12           SAT              Winter Preparedness and Survival Skills

FEB 12           SAT                                                3:00pm 20s&30s Fun Night at Boomers Fountain Valley

Release the inner child!  Miniature Golf, go-carts, and batting cages are just some of the great activities available.  You can bring your Valentine, or just celebrate being single!  Please bring at least $30 cash as there are various activities, plus the arcade games are rather addicting.  We may have dinner or see a movie afterwards.  We will meet in front of the main entrance at 3pm.  Corner of Magnolia and Warner in Fountain Valley.  From 405 South, exit Magnolia. FEB 20         SUN          7:00 AM            20s&30s SKI DAY AT MOUNTAIN HIGH

C: Every dark cloud has a silver lining, and this year's gloomy rains have produced the best skiing conditions in Southern California since the El Nino season of 97-98.  Let's take advantage of this with a day of skiing or snowboarding at the closest Ski Resort in the West, Mountain High, just 1 hr 15 minutes from both Los Angeles and Orange County, with virtually no mountain driving.  The resort is divided into east and west sections - both with plenty of trails from beginners to advanced skiers.  The east section is geared more toward skiers and has fewer snowboarders, so take your pick.  Let's get there early for a full day on the slopes!  Meet at North Orange County Carpool Point at 7 AM, or meet us in front of the ticket booth at Mtn. O: Hike the green and golden hills of this classic California landscape of wind-rippled grasses, statuesque oaks, trickling streams and nearly 500 different native plants.  Moderately paced, 7½ mile rt, 650' elevation gain/loss hike through Engelmann oak woodlands to the Vernal Pool Trail, Punta Mesa Trail, Vista Grande Trail for views of the snow dusted peaks of the San Bernardino and San Jacinto mountains.  Possible early spring flowers in bloom. Bring 3 qts. water, lugs, sun protection, lunch, and $4 parking fee.  Meet 8:00AM at Orange County North rideshare.  One hour ride to Santa Rosa from meeting point.  Rain cancels.  Leader: Virginia Lucas.  Co-leader: Dea Denton.

Mar 9-13       Wed-Sun                           Brian Head, Utah XC, Downhill, Snowsports Getaway

MAR 12           SAT                                  Mt. Pinos Backcountry Ski Tour

I: Moderately strenuous 4+ mile, 500' gain to panoramic vista. Ski from end of Mt Pinos Highway to summit at Condor Point. Possible side trips to Inspiration Point, other destinations, or just playing may add a few miles + a few 100 feet elevation loss & gain. Part of route may be in pre-existing tracks, but recent snowfall, rutted trail, or aesthetics may require breaking new trail.  Intermediate X-C skills required & metal-edged, backcountry skis & backcountry boots highly recommended.  Bring winter clothing, ten essentials, water, lunch.  No snow or likely blizzard cancels trip. Mar 12     Sat            5:30PM                                           Annual Pops Concert

Join OC Singles for the Annual Pops Concert, with music by Copland, Bernstein, John Williams, and Rossini.  Guest soloists will play the violin, the oboe, and the SAW.  The FREE concert begins at 8PM at the La Mirada Theater, located near the intersection of La Mirada Blvd. and Rosecrans Ave. in La Mirada.  Meet  5:30PM for dinner and socializing at the Sizzler, located one block east of the above intersection on Rosecrans at Adelfa.  Great social event for newcomers.  Contact: Bonnie Coons.


Mar 12-13           SAT-SUN                              20s & 30s Anza-Borrego Desert Car Camp and Hiking

O: The Anza Borrego Desert, the largest state park in the US, presents some of the most interesting and diverse landscapes around.  With varied hiking trails offering scenery, challenge, and history, the desert teems with wildflowers during the spring.  At night the dark desert sky gives us a million star lightshow.  Join us for an overnight trip to this unique place.  We will do two or three moderate hikes of about 3-5 miles, enjoy programs at the visitor center, learn about pioneer history, and tell stories around the campfire in our group campground.  Limited to 20 participants, ages 18-39 please.  We will meet Saturday morning at 8:30 at the North Orange County Carpool Point and return Sunday evening. MAR 22     Sierra Sage GENERAL MEETING:     HISTORIAN ADAM COLLINGS

Best selling author and historian Adam Collings will be presenting a program based on his recently released book, California/West of the West, at our March 22 gathering of Sierra Sage. Noted for his extensive research and attention to detail, Collings will offer us a well-documented view of Southern California as it appeared before the advent of Western civilization, sharing observations made about flora, fauna, and the cultures encountered by the first Europeans to arrive upon the scene. Backed up with rarely viewed or studied primary source material provided by private collectors, the Franciscan Order and the Southwest Museum, this evening promises not only entertaining but course-altering insight and information. Collings is a resident of San Clemente, docent at Mission San Juan Capistrano and in Walt Disney’s Barn, and a member of the Huntington Westerners, California Mission Studies Association and Mormon History Association. He will be available to sign copies of California/ West of the West immediately following his presentation. Don’t miss an engaging evening with one of California’s premiere historians.

Mar 27                 Sun                          Aliso Creek, Wood CAnyon Trails

O: Join us for a bike/hike adventure in Aliso-Wood Canyons Regional Park, the largest park in the hills above Laguna Beach.  Bike the first 1.5 miles to the trailhead (either mountain bikes or standard bicycles will do), then hike 6 miles in the park. Visit Old Corral, Sycamore Grove and Five Oaks Canyon before returning to your bike for riding the last 1.5 miles back to your car. Meet 9 am at the park.. (From I-5 take Alicia Pkwy exit. Proceed west for 4 miles. ¼ mile past Aliso Creek Rd turn right on the park service road crossing over a bridge. The parking lot is on your left.) Mar 27 - Apr 4         Sun-Mon                                  Copper Canyon Mexico

O: [OCSS, Palos Verdes-South Bay] Join us exploring the Sierra Tarahamara.  Fly to El Paso Sunday evening.  Monday AM travel by bus to Creel, Chihuahua, Mexico, gateway to the Copper Canyon region.  Spend three nights at Lodge in Creel.  Hike with leaders to Humira and the Incised Meanders of the Urique River, Cusarare Falls and Rekowata Hot Springs or explore on your own.  Descend on a road with breath taking vistas to the bottom of the spectacular Barranca Urique to spend three nights at the unique Riverside Inn in Batopilas.  Hike with leaders to the mysterious Satevo Mission and side canyons in the Batopilas area or just laze in the river or explore on your own.  Return to Creel for one last day to explore and shop while again enjoying the hospitality of the Best Western Lodge.  Return Monday to El Paso and catch evening flight home.  Price includes lodging in El Paso, Creel and Batopilas, transportation from El Paso to Creel and from Creel to Batopilas and return. O: Meet Sat 8:15 AM at Living Desert Museum in Palm Desert.  We will enter park and hike up Eisenhower Mountain (5 miles, approx 1,000' gain). April 9-10          Sat-Sun                Snow Camping/ Cornell Peak (9750') & San Jacinto Peak (10,804')

I: (OCSS / WTC): Snow camping and peak climbing trip in the San Jacinto Wilderness.  4 mi, 1500' gain the first day from the Palm Springs Tram, most with full backpack while on snowshoes.  7 mi of peak climbing, 2000' gain with snowshoes and daypacks the second day, before we pack out 2.5 mi to the tram.  Participants should expect to traverse and climb snow-covered slopes. Apr 9-10              Sat-Sun                                                        Santa Cruz Island

O: Pristine beaches, lonely canyons, grass-covered hills and some animals and plants that you have never seen before.  Join us for the weekend on this unique island.  Leave early Sat morning from Ventura Harbor, return late Sun afternoon.  Camp under shady Eucalyptus trees, enjoy day hikes to check out the island's unique flora and fauna the best time of the year when the wildflowers are in bloom.  Look for sea stars in the tide pools of Smugglers Cove or the island scrub jay in Scorpion Canyon. Visit a plane wreck on the hilltop, climb up to Cavern Pt for beautiful view of the shoreline.  Visit the historic ranch house or just relax under the Eucalyptus trees.  You are sure to enjoy this paradise island, the largest of the Channel Islands. The camping is a ¼ mile walk from the anchorage. Drinking water and toilets are available, but no showers. I: "Fine I'll do it myself":  Since I couldn't get on a similar hike, I'll do it myself with other myselfers.  We take the Palm Springs tram ($21 rt), hike to Round Valley Camp, then to Cornell Pk-4mi, 1400' gain trail and XC.  Sunday the remaining -10 mi, 3200' gain trail and XC and then out.  Snow conditions (if any) will dictate details/routes/objectives.  Send sase, H&W phones, recent backpacking experience/conditioning to Prov Ldr: Harry Forry,  Co-Ldr: Donna Specht.


MAY 15                 SUN                                        SAN GABRIEL MOUNTAINS – BEAR CANYON TRAIL CAMP

O: Moderately paced 8 mile rt, 1000' gain/loss hike in the Arroyo Seco area.  Get away from civilization into a remote area in the wilderness, so far yet so close.  Hike along a stream, among huge spruces, and view cascades and wildflowers along the way.  Meet at 8:00 AM in La Canada carpool point.  10½ mile drive to Switzer parking area.  Always bring water (2 quarts recommended), lug soles, sunscreen, snack/lunch, 10 essentials.  Rain will cancel.  Leader: G. MAY 16 – 23        MON-MON                                     VOYAGE OF THE GLACIERS, CHAPTER FUNDRAISER

Join fine art photographer Jack Bohlka, Senior Chapter Director of our Angeles Chapter, and Sierra Club outings leader John Lajeuness for a unique look at Costa Rica, one of the most diverse bio-regions on the planet.  Jack will present some of his fine art prints for display and will offer practical tips that you can use to take great photographs on your next trip.  John Lajeuness will share with us the incredible opportunities we have to see the world on a budget with experienced Sierra Club leaders.  Find out how you can travel to exotic places to meet local people and avoid the typical tourist traps!  Social hour, music, plus program. $2.
