Listed below you will see a listing of our various outings. Many details have been omitted for the sake of brevity. If reservations are required, make your reservations early! These outings often fill up fast. Also, if you have any questions about whether or not you have have the proper skills, conditioning, or equipment, please Contact the Leader.

Here's a list of abbreviations often used in the outing write-ups:

May 12 Wed      Orange County, SAMTF

O: Morgan Trail and Bear Cyn:  A one-way hike down the Morgan Trail, then up to 4 Corners and down to the Candy Store.  10 mi, 850’ gain, 1700’ loss.  Car shuttle.  Bring plenty of water, lunch, lugsoles.  Meet 8:30 am S Orange County rideshare pt.  Ldr: Patti Barnes.  Asst: Bruce Hemphill. H C


May 22-23         Sat-Sun              Sierra Sage of S OC, SAMTF, Trails

O: San Mateo Trail–Trail Maintenance:  This will be the 28th Annual “Backpack / Swimming / Gourmet Trail Maintenance” outing in the San Mateo Wilderness.  Sat AM, backpack 4 mi 350’ gain/900’ loss to campsite near San Mateo Creek.  Sat afternoon & Sun morning work on San Mateo Cyn Trail below campsite.  Tools furnished by USFS.  Rain or extreme fire danger cancels.  FSP reqd at trailhead.  For details / reserve, send email or SASE with H&W phones to Ldr: John Kaiser. kaiser@pulsco.com   Asst: Paul Carlton. May 19           Wed             Orange County

O: Santa Rosa Plateau:  A special preserve that is splendid in the spring with lots of wildflowers.  9-10 mi, 700’ gain.  Meet 8:00 am N Orange County rideshare pt, or 9:00 am at the entrance to the Plateau’s visitor center.  Small donation.  Bring 2 qts water, lunch, lugsoles.  Ldr: Lynda Armbruster.  Asst: Patti Barnes. May 22 Sat        Sierra Sage of S OC, SAMTF

O: Lion Canyon Waterfall:  10 mi rt, 1500’ gain along the Chiquito trail from the Candy Store to Lion Cyn waterfall.  During this hike, a member of the SAMTF will explain the urgent need to “Keep the Forest Wild”, and the program of the SAMTF to accomplish this goal.  Meet 9:00 am at SOC rideshare pt.  Bring 2 qts water, lunch, lugsoles, hat.  FSP reqd at trailhead.  Ldr: Chet Stipe.  Asst: Dave Taylor. May 26 Wed      Orange County

O: Talbert Regional Park:  Hike along the Santa Ana River thru Talbert Nature Preserve and Regional Park, up to 10 mi, (to beach and return), 100’ gain.  We will cross 6 separate and distinct plant group zones.  Meet 9:00 am at the entrance to Fairview Park, on the W side of Placentia Av, S of Adams St in Costa Mesa.  Bring water, lunch.  Ldr: Keats Hayden.  Asst: Gordon Lindberg. May 29 Sat        Sierra Sage of S Orange Co

O: Caspers Wilderness Park, East Ridge:  Slower paced 7 mi, 600’ gain.  Meet 8:30 am at S OC rideshare pt.  Bring 2 qts water, lugsoles, hat. $4 car fee at Park entrance.  Rain/recent rain cancels.  Ldr: John Kaiser.  Asst: Bob Hansen. H C E


May 29-31           Sat-Mon            Sierra Sage of S Orange Co

O: MT San Jacinto Backpack:  5 mi, 1600’ gain.  Depart Sat 9:30 am Humber Park, Idyllwild to Laws Camp.  Return Sun 3 pm.  Optional day hikes to Tahquitz and San Jacinto peaks, Pacific Coast Trail section.  History, geology, flora, fauna and preservation of area discussed.  No beginners.  All campers self-supporting.  Leader provides permit, water filters, dining fly, shovel.  FSP reqd at trailhead.  Send $15, SASE to leader for maps, car pool info.  Ldr: Bruce Boydston.  Asst: Ron Barbour. O: Lion Cyn Falls:  A beautiful hike from Blue Jay Campground down a mostly wooded trail to the falls for lunch.  9 mi, 1000’ gain.  Meet 8:30 am S Orange County rideshare pt with 2 qts water, lunch, lugsoles.  Long pants, long-sleeved shirt advised for possible poison oak.  Ldr: Bill Gray.  Asst: Pita Landesman. Jun 05  Sat        Sierra Sage of S OC, Friends of the Foothills, Easy Hikers

O: Donna O’Neill Land Conservancy:  Easy walk, 1.5 mi rt.  Enjoy the beautiful scenery and dramatic spring wildflowers on this slow-paced nearly level walk.  Meet 8:30 am at SOC rideshare pt.  A member of FOF will explain the need to preserve this ecological hot spot.  Bring water, hat, sunscreen.  Donation of $3 to support the work of the DOLC.  Rain cancels.  Ldr: Brittany McKee.  Asst: Paul Carlton.  W C E

O: Bike Ride, Aliso Creek Bikeway:  26 mi rt, 900’ gain.  Scenic paved route to Cook’s Corner, includes wooded creekside and a natural history museum.  Meet 9:00 am, Aliso/Wood Canyons Wilderness Park.  From Alicia Pkwy in Laguna Niguel, exit AWMA Rd to prkg lot ($2 fee).  Bring lunch (or buy), water, sunscreen, tube repair/spare.  Helmet reqd.  Rain cancels.  Ldr: Dave Taylor.  Asst: Chet Stipe. O: Joplin Trail--Trail Maintenance:  Honor NATIONAL TRAILS DAY and help repair this trail in the Santa Ana Mtns.  Bring lunch, water, sturdy boots and food for overnight carcamp nearby.  Most tools furnished by USFS.  Meet 7:00 am N OC or S OC rideshare pts.  Ldr: Allyn Cooksey.  Asst: Denny Bean. O: Coyote Hills Conservation Brunch Hike:  Join us for an easy 5 mi rt 500’ gain loop hike to view the last remaining undeveloped wilderness near Fullerton.  The oil company owning the land wants to build 750 houses on 500 acres, home to gnatcatchers and other endangered species.  Meet 9:00 am Laguna Lake Equestrian Center (on Lakeview Dr off Euclid North of Rosecrans).  Bring water and brunch item to share with 4.  Bring $5 donation for conservation fund.  Heavy rain cancels.  Ldr: Chuck Buck.  Asst: Bernie Lipman. O: Caspers Wilderness Park, West Ridge Loop:  A “Mike’s Hike” 4 mi rt, 400’ gain.  Enjoy views of Saddleback, Coto, etc from West Ridge, and return thru cathedral groves of Oak trees.  Meet 7:30 am Bell Cyn prkg lot at the far N end of Bell Cyn Rd, Caspers Park.  Bring water, hat or cap, sun screen, lugsoles, $ for park fee.  Rain/recent rain cancels.  Ldr: Mike Sappingfield.  Asst: John Kaiser. O: Crystal Cove State Park,--El Moro Cyn:  Enjoy the ocean views and cooling breezes on a 9 mi, 800’ gain hike.  Meet 8:00 am at the Park parking lot, E of PCH.  Parking fee.  Bring 2 qts water, lunch, lugsoles.  Ldr: Lynda Armbruster.  Asst: Bruce Hemphill. H C

O: Whiting Ranch Wilderness Park:  Hike a loop, first to the red rocks, then on to 4 Corners and back by the water tank in this shady county park.  7 mi, 600’ gain.  Meet 9:00 am at Portola Pkwy –Market St entrance to the Park with dbl water, lunch lugsoles.  Ldr: Bernie Jaroslow.  Asst: Sid Alpert.  H C


Jun 26  Sat        Sierra Sage of S Orange Co

O: Bike Ride, Laguna Niguel to Capistrano and Beaches:  23 mi paved loop, 700’ gain, moderate pace.  A scenic paved loop ride thru San Juan Capistrano Historic District, Dana Harbor, and 3 Beach Parks.  Meet 9:00 am Chapparosa Park (from Golden Lantern in Laguna Niguel, exit Chapparosa Dr to baseball parking).  Bring water, lunch, tube repair/spare.  Helmet reqd.  Rain cancels.  Ldr: Dave Taylor.  Asst: Chet Stipe. O: End-of Season Hike and Potluck:  Meet 9:30 am at Santiago Oaks Regional Park for a 4 mi, 700’ gain hike to Robbers Pk.  The Park is off Santiago Cyn Rd, on Windes Dr in Orange (parking fee).  Bring water, lugsoles for the hike.  Bring a lunch dish for 4-6 to share for the potluck lunch, plus your own plate, utensils, drink.  Ldr: Bruce Hemphill.  Asst: Pita Landesman.
