Orange County Inner City Outings
Volunteer Opportunities
What's Involved
Volunteers are welcome to join any ICO outing. Assistance is always needed and appreciated! Volunteers accompany the hikes or participate in the restoration activities - interacting with the kids and supporting the leader. No prior experience is necessary, just a desire to help out and have fun!
General Outing Logistics
Outings occur throughout the week, but mostly on Saturdays. Although there are some longer hikes and overnight trips, most outings run from about 9am to 2pm. Hikes are approximately 3 to 5 miles in length. Restoration activities (like beach clean-ups) usually last from 9AM to noon. Volunteers typically meet Leaders at the designated meeting site, or carpool there with them.
What to Bring and Wear
Depending upon the weather, you should wear light colored shorts or long pants, shirt and jacket, hat with a brim, and sturdy walking shoes. Hikings boots are generally not necessary, but may make the hike more comfortable. You should bring 2 quarts of water, lunch, suncreen, sunglasses, and daypack. You may also wish to bring a whistle, camera, frisbee, ball, or nature books.
Current Outing Schedule
For safety reasons, the Outings Schedule posted on this Website includes only date, general location and Leader contact information. Please call the designated outing Leaders for more information on a specific outing.
Getting Started
Becoming an ICO Certified Leader
You may continue as a volunteer indefinitely. However, we hope you will enjoy what we are doing, come to meetings, and become an Outings Leader yourself. Jump to the Info for Leaders page!
