O: Upper Newport Bay Ecological Reserve: Easy paced 6 mi rt to enjoy nature, bird watch, learn about a variety of habitats, review some local history, enjoy some good food at the Back Bay Cafe and have a good time. Reasonably flat terrain with stops for photo shoots. Meet at East Bluff Drive and the top of Back Bay Drive off of Jamboree at 8:45 AM. Bring binoculars, camera, $ for lunch, water and sun protection. Lug sole shoes suggested. We’ll walk the Back Bay Drive, tour Big Canyon stop at the Back Bay Café for lunch and return by mid afternoon. Rain cancels.

We will hike with frequent stops about 3 miles on road and trail, 1000 ft gain. Bring hat, water, sturdy walking shoes, and any plant ID materials you may have. Optional lunch in the canyon after the hike. Meet at 9 am in the parking lot at Millard Canyon in Altadena: from the 210 Fwy in Pasadena, take the Fair Oaks exit and continue north 3.6 miles to the stop sign intersection at Loma Alta. Turn left and continue .3 mile to the flashing yellow signal at Chaney Trail Turn right and continue 1.7 miles up into the mountains and down into the parking lot. Forest Service pass required. O: Winter Ecology Workshop at June Lake: Join us for two days of xc skiing, tracking, and naturalizing in the spectacular Mammoth-June Lake area. Intermediate ski touring ability required. This trip satisfies the Natural Science requirement for the I-rating. I: Onyx Pk #2 (5244'), Saddleback Butte (3651'): This should be a pretty good spring for wildflowers so we will take tome to smell them. Onyx (SE of Lake Isabella) has the best display I've ever seen. 4 miles, 2300' gain cross country route, some steep sand. O: Arroyo Seco above JPL: Join naturalists Gabi and Cliff McLean on a slow hike in this scenic canyon. We will look at the canyon and identify invasive plants that have replaced native species and are threatening to kill the still existing oak trees and alders. We will discuss the threat of invasive species to our wildlands, and also look at birds, reptiles, insects and anything else that we find. This is a slow-paced nature hike, 4 mi rt, only 500 ft gain, but a few stream crossings. Meet 9:00 am at the west-end of Altadena Drive in Altadena, park on the street. O: Santa Ana River To The Beach: Please join us for a seven-mile, virtually no elevation gain hike through Fairview Park to the Talbert Nature Preserve and on to Banning Ranch and the beach. Learn about the history of this area and importance of preserving this sensitive and endangered ecosystem as part of an proposed park/nature center designed to provide an "oasis of tranquility" near the confluence of the Santa Ana River and the ocean. Meet at 9:00 a.m. at Fairview Park, Costa Mesa (405 Fwy to Harbor-south, right on Adams, left on Placentia, right after approximately 1/4 mile into the Fairview Park parking lot-parking is free). O: Nature Knowledge Workshop: Join the Natural Science Section for a weekend of discovery and enjoyment as you learn about the natural wonders that surround you. From our streamside camp accommodations in the San Bernardino Mtns. we’ll explore 3 habitats- chaparral, forest and riparian via easy guided walks led by our naturalists. Special interest and hands on workshops will be taught Sat. afternoon and evening by our professional naturalists who will share their expertise in a variety of natural history topics such as bird, bat, reptile, plant, mammal, insect, and geology studies. Fee includes 2 nights lodging in dormitory cabins (bring own sleeping bag), 6 full-course meals and instruction. (Tent or car camping available). All this and hot showers too! O: Telescope (11,049 ft) and Wildrose (9064 ft): Weekend: car camp to explore the “sky islands” high above Death Valley. See ancient bristlecones and bag an emblem peak. O: UPPER NEWPORT BACK BAY ECOLOGICAL RESERVE HIKE: Easy paced 6 mi rt to enjoy nature, bird watch, learn about a variety of habitats, review some local history, enjoy some good food at the Back Bay Cafe and have a good time. Reasonably flat terrain with stops for photo shoots. Meet at East Bluff Drive and the top of Back Bay Drive off of Jamboree at 8:45 AM. Bring binoculars, camera, $ for lunch, water and sun protection. Lug sole shoes suggested. We’ll walk the Back Bay Drive, tour Big Canyon stop at the Back Bay Café for lunch and return by mid afternoon. Rain cancels.

O: Lily and Orchid Hike: Join lily enthusiast and photographer Jeff Johnson on this hike from Three Points around the southwest side of Waterman to a lovely meadow of Incense Cedar, and if we’re lucky, lemon lilies, rein orchids, and stream orchids. Moderately paced, 8 mi rt, 1500 ft gain. Meet at 8 am at the La Canada carpool point with water, lunch, hat, camera. Leaders Jeff Johnson and Ginny Heringer.
