On Thursday, February 22nd, the Metro Board voted (11-0) to approve the EIR for Frank McCourt's LA Art Gondola Project. A disappointing outcome. This was despite the dozens of community activists (Chinatown residents, environmentalists, professors, park advocates, journalists etc.) who spoke against this project that is unsolicited and against the desires of the community that would be negatively impacted by the construction and ongoing gentrification of the area. Council member Eunisses Hernandez of CD 1, spoke passionately about the harm this project would bring to her district and even shared comments from the Gabrielno Tongva peoples who also oppose and stand in solidarity with the coalition against the Gondola. The Sierra Club strongly opposes this project because:

This project is not a real transportation project. It is a false solution to the transportation and true needs of the community.

This project is not community-driven, lacking transparency from the start. It is an attack on the local historic neighborhoods that have already been victims of displacement and gentrification.

It is an attack on the limited open spaces and parks in the community. Los Angeles State Historic Park (LASHP) is a vital green space in Chinatown. The park and other wellness, educational, and art programs are all at risk of loss if the gondola is built. It is important to note that during the pandemic, LASHP was a community hub, serving as a center where mutual aid and access to necessities like food, covid relief and other services were provided. The resilient and thriving space that has been co-created by the community is also at stake.

Since the Metro Board meeting, Councilmember Hernandez has introduced a motion (Councilfile #24-0011-S4) to put a hold on the project and do a comprehensive traffic study. The project will now be voted on by LA City Council, Cal Trans, State Parks and then Back to Metro Board for final approval. The Chapter’s Central Group Committee continues to been actively engaged in the opposition to this project. Mobilizing for a better outcome at the next vote.
