National Drive Electric Week

This was a fun and informative event, learning about the different types of Electric Vehicles (EV's), seeing all these cool vehicles in one place, and meeting their very proud owners. The exhibits included all-electric and plug-in hybrid-electric cars, trucks, and motorcycles. The owners all swear they’d never go back to a gasoline-powered vehicle again! Some of the many vehicles on display included BMW i3, Kia Soul EV, Nissan LEAF, electric-motor converted antique cars, and of course, Tesla Models. Another exciting part of the show was that people had the opportunity to sign up to test drive some of these vehicles, a popular activity! The attendees also had the opportunity to learn more about EV incentives, technical information, and other relevant details.

Steve Wicke and I tabled in the morning, and in the afternoon a new volunteer, Guy Gutterman, helped me after Steve left. Upon speaking with the folks who came over to the Sierra Club table, we found that most were people who already owned an EV and were upgrading, or were people who were considering purchasing an EV as their next vehicle, and some who were simply curious and wanted more information about EVs. Folks also wanted to learn more about the Sierra Club, and expressed interest in our support for renewable energy and their awareness of Climate Change.

The Sierra Club was also honored to receive a certificate of appreciation by Fiona Ma, California State Treasurer, acknowledging the Angeles Chapter’s continuing support of this event and for supporting the adoption of EV’s in the transportation mix in Los Angeles. The Chapter also continues to be a strong proponent of converting gasoline-powered school and municipal buses, as well as trucks, to electric-powered vehicles. Of course, we always encourage smart community planning and use of public transit, bicycling, car-pooling, etc.
