If you have a knack for numbers, a background or interest in accounting, the ability to understand checking accounts and bank balances, and are skilled working with people in an organization, this may be the perfect volunteer spot for you.

As treasurer, you would work with the treasurers of Angeles Chapter regional groups, activity sections, committees and task forces to compile the Annual Financial Statement. The treasurer coordinates the work of entity treasurers as one team to support the financial operations of the Chapter. This rewarding venture allows you to be an integral part of the Chapter and affords you the opportunity to work with Chapter staff and many interesting people locally and at the National Office of the Sierra Club.

Purpose:  Use your part-time financial and bookkeeping skills to manage and report on the Angeles Chapter's finances

Position requirements:

·         Carry out the general responsibilities expected from an Executive Committee member.

·         Monitor the budget, report significant deviations, and ensure that an adequate cash reserve balance is maintained.

·         Periodically report to the Executive Committee and membership on the condition of Chapter finances.

·         Ensure compliance with all policies and procedures of the Sierra Club and generally accepted accounting principles, and laws of the State of California.

·         Ensure that the Chapter does not commit to financial obligations greater than its unencumbered cash balances and required reserve.

·         Collaborate with Chapter staff responsible for the following:

·         Maintain and reconcile all bank accounts and track all related transactions in QuickBooks Online.

·         Provide oversight and analysis of all financial transactions.

·         Prepare required financial reporting forms and safeguard financial records.

 

Qualifications:

·         Ability to provide attention to detail and to keep orderly and accurate records.

·         Working knowledge of Microsoft Excel is required.

·         QuickBooks Online experience is a plus, as is some knowledge of financial reporting and transaction processing.

·         Willingness to ask challenging questions persistently. Objectively must be able to say “No” when necessary.

 

Provide support to the Chapter:

 

·         Provide oversight and assistance in preparation of the annual consolidated IRS financial statement and audit.

·         Work closely with the Chapter Finance Committee.

·         Report to the Executive Committee on the financial status of the Chapter, assist in the annual budget process and provide continuous monitoring of the approved budget compared to actual results.

·         Ensure that the budget builds and maintains a cash reserve at the level specified by Sierra Club policy.

·         Act as a liaison between entity treasurers appointed by the Chapter’s groups, sections, committees and task forces, and the National Office.

·         Communicate to assistant treasurers and entity treasurers the scope of their responsibilities and provide assistance and guidance in meeting them.

·         Implement oversight and direction provided by the Chapter Executive Committee.

·         Train your successor and turn over all Chapter financial records to that person.
