OK, these aren't Sierra Peaks, nor do they count on any Hundred Peaks list, nor are they in the Desert Peaks repertoire, and they are probably too low for the Lower Peaks crowd. These are merely peaklets in Griffith Park, and there are lots of them. If you haven't ascended a peaklet before or if you've already conquered a couple, come join with us as we bag a bunch on our Griffith Park Peaklets hike starting at 8 a.m. Dec. 12.

This is a strenuous hike that covers 13 miles with 3,500 feet elevation gain on scrambles to nine or more different peaklets in Griffith Park, the finest city park in the country and even the world and just possibly the universe. Plan to spend most of the day hiking on this outing sponsored by the Wilderness Adventures Section. There may be times we are hiking on fire roads, but there is significant uphill and downhill scrambling. The group will hike at a moderate pace with the intention of everybody who starts the hike to finish.

The nine peaklets (a.k.a. rocks, hills, and mounts) are:
  1. Bee Rock
  2. Mt. Bell
  3. Mt. Chapel
  4. Mt. Lee
  5. Cahuenga Peak
  6. Burbank Peak
  7. Mt. Hollywood
  8. Glendale Peak
  9. Beacon Hill
Note Burbank is at one end of the park while Beacon is at the other -- and it's a big park. The route may also take us to a number of other peaklets such as Mt. Taco, Mt. Temple, Pasadena Peak, Alhambra Peak, etc. OK, most of these other peaklets have made-up  names, so don’t expect to bag all of these on any other Griffith Park hike. Lunch stop will be at the Magic Tree, snack time at Dante’s View, and you'll find interesting views of the Hollywood Sign and other L.A. landmarks along the way.

Poles and good hiking shoes are recommended as well as sunscreen and at least 2 quarts of water (there are a couple places where it is possible to replenish water along the way).

Meet 8 a.m. Dec. 12 at the upper Griffith Park Merry-Go-Round at 8:00 AM. This is a Sierra Club hike sponsored by the Wilderness Adventures so all participants need to sign a waiver form before the hike and scoot along between the leader and sweep during the hike.
