The U.S. and China released a groundbreaking announcement Tuesday to set ambitious goals for climate action and carbon pollution reductions.

President Obama has made a pledge for 2025 that keeps the United States on track to cut its carbon pollution by 80% by 2050, and setting a high bar for future administrations. And for the first time ever, China committed to peak its carbon emissions by 2030 at the latest.

Michael Brune, Sierra Club Executive Director, released the following statement in response:

“The Sierra Club applauds President Obama and President Xi for setting ambitious goals to reduce dangerous carbon pollution and tackle the climate crisis.

“China's new goal of producing 20% of its power from clean energy by 2030 is a huge step forward that signals a historic shift away from dirty fossil fuels, and could drive a new global competition for clean energy technology."
