June

It is with a heavy heart that I say goodbye to my wonderful friend June (Weinstein, Frances) Court who passed away in May. She and I met about 40 years ago at a Griffith Park night hike and were friends from that night on.

We started going on hikes together in the San Gabriels. Soon we were taking BMTC and the Leadership Training Course. After taking the course, what could we do but lead hikes? And we did lead hikes and bike rides for many years.

June was the brains of our team. She was the on writing up the hike descriptions, filling out forms when necessary, and seeing to it that we scouted the trail before the hike. I would usually lead the group and June would sweep. She was the one who caught up with me on our famous Mother's Day hike in Chantry Flats and counted the 70 participants coming down the Wintercreek Trail to be sure we hadn't lost any hiker along the way. We hadn't--it was a day to remember.

One day, June met Bill Court on a hike. It didn't take long for them to realize they had a good thing going. It took another hike for the wedding. Up to Chantry Flats again and this time to Hoegee's Camp with many friends and with Bill hauling champagne in his backpack. At June's request, I played 'Ode to Joy' on my recorder.

June and Bill moved to Santa Rosa eventually, but June and I kept in touch throughout the years by mail and visits. Her last years were very difficult due to Parkinson's, but she wrote and called when she could. I shall miss her letters and her calls and I long to turn back the clock as I'm sure her daughters, Lela and Nora, and her grandsons do also.
