Southern Sierran
Wild Borneo, Land of the Headhunters
by Fred Dong

Baby Monkey
Mark your calendar for monkey business in Borneo next Sept. 4-22

We were returning to our lodge and encountered a large group of macaque monkeys. This was no ordinary group, but a young monkey school group with a few adults supervising. This lively group was playing with a park banner and getting into monkey business. We had just returned from seeing a group of the unusual proboscis monkeys. Later that day, we encountered a troop of silver leaf monkeys.

This could be one of the many experiences that you may have on our Chapter-sponsored Wild Borneo Adventure, September 4-22, 2010. You will see the endangered Orangutans besides lots of different monkeys, hornbills, and many other birds. We also may see gibbons, pygmy rlephants, rafflesia (world’s largest flower), and more; some unique to Borneo. Pitcher plants abound from smaller than a dime to ones as large as pitchers.

We will stay at some of the premier wildlife lodges and visit rainforest areas in order to get close ups of the unusual plants and animals of Borneo. We will also spend a day with researchers at a Conservation Research Center. We will visit several National Parks or Jungle Reserve areas including Bako, Kinabalu, Danum Valley Conservation Area, and Kinabatangan Wildlife Reserve as well as the Sepilok and Semenggoh Orangutan Sanctuaries. You will also have time to visit the beautiful coral reefs of Tunku Abdul Rahman Park. See unusual animals and bioluminescence on the night walks led by naturalists. Enjoy this unique trip visiting unusual rainforest and other areas with us Sept. 4-22 led by Fred Dong & Stephanie Gross.
