L.A. County Green Building Program Needs Your Support

By Jim Stewart

Global Warming, Energy and Air Quality Committee

LA County Supervisors have directed staff to prepare a draft Green Building Ordinance that needs your support. Please send a letter by January 7, 2008, to zoup@planning.lacounty.gov and also speak at the community meetings in January (for a schedule, go to: http://planning.lacounty.gov/spGreenBuildingProgram.htm).

For more info and regular updates on Global Warming and Green Building issues, contact Jim Stewart at (Jim@EarthDayLA.org) or Lore Pekrul (elpe1@earthlink.net) to get on their email lists (phones in schedule). Also join us at our regular meetings: Global Warming (2nd Thursdays, 7 pm) Green Building (4th Wednesdays, 7 pm), both at Chapter offices to discuss proposed Green Building Ordinances that include green building standards, drought-tolerant and native landscaping and low-impact development standards. Staff will be presenting recommendations to the Regional Planning Commission in January of 2008. These meetings are open to the public.

Subject: Require water and energy efficiency for all new development

Dear Department of Regional Planning,

We commend the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors’ efforts to address global warming and drought issues through a comprehensive Green Building program.

We urge the Board to adopt an ordinance (perhaps similar to that of West Hollywood), which requires strict energy and water use standards for all new development, remodels and tenant improvements.

Thank you for your concern about global warming and water and energy conservation.
