Troy Braswell, a local MTB activist, rounded up a lot of local riders and we had some old timers and new comers as well. Troy is taking LTC  Oct. 1! He plans on getting his rating and leading mtb rides for SCMBC. So it was a productive day. We had lunch afterwards and discussed the future of mountain biking in Portuguese Bend and the up coming battle we face to keep the trails open to mtber's when we get to creating the trail management plan. The land purchase of Portuguese Bend is going through thanks to the community fundraising efforts! It will be managed by the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy to remain as open space in perpetuity. CORBA has raised about $6000 to ensure that mountain bikers have a vested claim in Portuguese Bend.

Seven riders met at Pt. Mugu State Park on a misty and foggy morning to escape the valley heat. We headed up the Overlook fire road and broke out of the mist at the summit, then decended down Hell Hill to the Wood Canyon trail, which has overgrown into a single track with many stream crossings. After climbing out of Ranch Center Road and gaining the remaining elevation up Sycamore Canyon road, we met for lunch at a cafe for a much needed rest and refuel. We then made our way to the Satwiwa museum for a tour of the native plant gardens and spoke to the rangers about the native Americans who lived in the area. After digesting our lunch, we enjoyed many wet splashes as we made our way downhill through Big Sycamore Canyon. The ocean breezes made for a cool headwind and we finished up the day with watermelon for everyone (thanks to Bahram!)

Jan 29, 2005              Sat                   MBC (and bike bagging an HPS peak)

Lorene, Tad, Mike, & Don met on a brisk January morning after a storm
the previous night. Skies were incredibly clear with temperatures in the
40s. At the Dillon Divide trailhead, we quickly put on all of our warm
clothes in the strong wind, and kept them on almost all day! But the
Mendenhall fire road was in very good shape considering the extreme
rains this month, and we only found 2-3 spots where we had to walk our
bikes around mud. Much of the road is on the north side and shady
with patches of frost, but as we reached a saddle we crossed onto the
south face and were greeted with sunshine and fabulous views of the
ocean and Catalina. We kept climbing steadily but at a forgiving grade
through the scree-laden road first to Highline Saddle, then Mendenhall
Saddle, and finally Iron Mountain Saddle. Pushing further, we rounded
"Iron Mtn #2" and decided to hike the steep firebreak to the peak. At
the summit, 5635', we found the Sierra Club register and were pleased to
find we were the first to sign in for 2005! In the distance, Mt
Waterman, Twin Peaks, and the higher peaks around Mt.Baden Powell were
white with snow, while the Pacific Ocean looked very close to the south.
We coasted most of the way back as the clouds started moving in and made
it back with plenty of daylight. Thanks to everyone for a great day.

Jan 8, 2005                Sat                               MBC                             Conservation

Despite heavy rains for many days before and after the event, we managed to work through the morning with only the slightest hint of occasional drizzles.  Approximately 10 people from various organizations met and joined forces to repair and improve the 6 lower switchbacks of the San Juan Trail.  We dug water troughs to divert drainage into the adjoining canyons instead of down the switchbacked face, and graded the turns to improve durability of the decomposed granite tread.  At the scheduled noon quitting time , we were ushered off the mountain by heavy downpours that lasted through the day.  On the splashy hike down, we received immediate gratification from out labors when we saw rivlets forming and meandering off the trail exactly as planned.  Thanks to all who attended!

O: San Juan Trail Maintenance:  Focusing on brush or dirt work on the lower switchbacks. There will be a short orientation and then hike or bike to the work site.  Meet 9 am at lower San Juan parking lot. From Orange County drive S on I-5. Exit at Ortega Highway (74). The weather co-operated with just a few sprinkles and a beautiful display of clouds behaind a backdrop of snowcapped peaks.  Water bars were cleaned, yuccas were cut, grade dips created and debris was removed in about 3.5 hours of fun diggin' in the dirt. Rich did a great job of setting up the work stations, Daniel and REI provided terrific support with food and swag.  The MBC was shamelessly promoted. All in all a great day.

Oct 2, 2004               Sat                   Mountain Bike

Seven riders met on Saturday for a tour through the local open space preserves in the La Canada/Glendale area. We rode out to the trails from the rideshare point, and quickly climbed the dirt roads and sandy single tracks in Cherry Canyon park, which were covered in deer-prints. We had great views of the San Gabriels and Verdugo Mountains -- our next destination. We rode out along a ridge and descended a steep single track which pops out at a bridge underneath the 2 freeway, and allows bike access to the Verdugos. We made our way through quiet Montrose neighborhoods and started our steep climb above Oakmont Country Club to the new Verdugo Mountains Open Space Preserve, a recent acquisition of the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy, City of Glendale and the state. Once slated for development, the preserve has several fire roads which climb and wind their way first through chaparrel plants, and then descend into a cool oak and sycamore shaded canyon, where we took some pictures. Afterward, we enjoyed some shade and water at Oakmont View Park before the road-ride back to our cars. Thanks to everyone who participated!

Jul 10, 2004               Sat                   Mountain Bike

Lorene and Mike and a group of 8 riders started at Charleton Flats and
climbed up the road to Vetter Mtn Lookout tower, which was staffed by
volunteers. Lots of tree thinning has taken place by the forest service
due to the bark beetle infestations. Vetter was a cool break and we were
treated to a rattlesnake hanging out under the bird-feeders. We headed
down the single track (with "shepherds" - faster riders - placed at the
intersections to guide riders to the right trail), and regrouped at the
base of Charleton to pick up the Silver Mocassin trail and start our
climb up to Chilao. The sun was blazing even though the official high
was only 85 degrees. We bounced up and down several stretches of single
track before reaching the long fire-road climb up to Mt. Hillyer. The
sand-snakes were busy trying to take out bikers as we climbed the steep
switchbacks to the top. After regrouping at the summit and signing the
peak register, we headed into the boulders for the single-track fun -
boulders, dropoffs, sand, & tree-roots. We continued down the Silver
Mocassin and over the countless railroad-tie waterbars back to Chilao.
While refilling at a water fountain, we attracted the notice of several
birds, including a pair of white-headed woopeckers and some chickadees,
who were also eager to take a drink. We finished up the ride with a stop
at the air-conditioned Visitor's Center to check out the local history
displays and then climbed the highway back to the cars. A great day to
be out!

We had a warm but pleasant climb up to the Nike missile site with picnic tables and shade, and headed across Mulholland to drop into Sullivan Canyon. The Sullivan canyon trail was cool and shady. Most of the skiers showed their skills transfer well to bikes and they sped along the track absorbing the bumps and quick turns with ease. A fun morning ride!

 Jun 20, 2004                          Sun                              MBC

Lorene and Bahram were joined by 4 strong riders on the Mt Lukens loop. The day was cool with coastal fog and breeze, despite being summer solstice. Deer prints were visible on the sandy fire road all the way to the antenna farm on the summit. On the way, Bahram found a king snake coiled up, in the process of swallowing a lizard - whole! We contemplated this as we finished our climb. After a short lunch break, we headed down to the Grizzly Road turnoff, and then followed the trail to Hoyt saddle. The Hoyt single track was recently worked by the forest service and CORBA volunteers and is in superb shape! After much fun was had we coasted down to the cars on the highway. We only saw one other person during the remote 18 mile dirt portion of the ride. Bahram rewarded us with cold watermelon at the finish.
